Someone suggested Spyderco mill the inner hole to give it better grip rather than make it smooth.
Who suggested this? Maybe they can explain why.

"BILL: This is called a Scrumdidilyumptious Bar.
WINKELMANN: Scrumbibilyunctious Bar? How does he do it? BILL: My dear boy, do you ask a fish how it swims?
WINKELMANN: No . . . BILL: Or a bird how it flies?
WINKELMANN: No . . . BILL: No sirree, you don't! They do it because they were born to do it. Just like Willy Wonka was born to be a candy man, you look like you were born to be a Wonkarer."
You can't improve on perfection.

I think the opening hole could be 'supplemented' via the ATR 'cobra hood'. This provides a secondary / backup method of opening should your thumb not fully engage the thumb hole, and also provides a much more comfortable thumb rest when using the knife.
I think it would be cool to see these offered as an aftermarket/spyderco option for adding to some of Spydercos most popular models, thats secured with set screws pressing along the side of the blade as a friction fit.
Cobrahood + Wave option I think would also be popular as a bolt on addition.

Never thought about this as it works very well for me on all models, small, large, backlock, RIL, CBBL, linerlock, comp lock, etc, etc.

Just don't suggest getting rid of the spydie hole. You would break the internet, and all the spydie employees couldn't put it back together

I take a Dremel to all of mine that aren't DLC, cleaning up any machine marks inside the hole and sharpening the edge so it's nice and crisp.

My favorite opening hole is this one:
Chamfering and widening the hole does improve flickability, but is it worth changing Spyderco's signature design?

I can’t see how the tictac opening hole works better than the perfect circle opening hole. Definitely not as functional. but for fidgety pocket jewelry knives ig it doesn’t matter.
I wouldn’t want a rough opening hole. As you open the knife the skin on your thumb is rotated against the edge of the hole. A rough perimeter would cut into that skin like a serrated edge. I want a smooth hole, sharp enough to grab the finger pad but not sharp enough to slice into it.

More area to catch your finger. You can't fail a reverse flick with that design.
