I ordered an SPY-DK. What can I expect?

I saw an orange SPY-DK for sale with free shipping at an okay price, so I broke down and ordered it to go with my other Slipits. What can I expect? I've only heard one complaint about F&F.

It's a nice knife. Very pointy and slim. The only problem is it's a tad harder to open. Needs an easy opener spot carved into the handle, something like this...

I really wish Sal would have went through with the larger Roadie, or whatever two hand knife he has a prototype of, was called.

It’s a really nice size, no issues with f&f for me, but I missed the oho.

Hence my recent Byrd Tern purchase.

I forgot to mention the nice size of it. How do you like the Tern? Nice action and lockup?

I like mine. Can open it one-handed fairly easily, have just enough purchase on the small hole.

Would love to see Spyderco get some more use out of the DK's frn molds with a leaf-shaped blade, even if was just a sprint or flash batch vs. regular production.

Needed a scrub and some oil, but now it’s really very good.

F&F not to Golden quality, but should be a good workhorse.

Wasn’t there a planned slipjoint between the Urban and UKPK at one time?

The Metropolitan or something.

Dang Jazz. How did you do that mod. It looks factory.

As to the larger Roadie...that needs to happen pronto. I actually have one drawn out to show to Sal, but I am not a good drawer. It is basically a pointy sheep foot or modified wharncliffe with the dimple and Roadie handle.

I just used a carbide bit on the Dremel, sandpapers, and a Dremel brush bit to clean out the dark that the wet-dry sandpaper left.

I'd like to see your drawing. I did one, but should have incorporated Sal's choil design into it...

The Metropolitan or something.

Yes, using the DK scales. That's exactly what I was alluding to. Iirc, there was concern about enough demand for another "tweener" sized slipjoint, but if the frn molds are already sitting there, why not? Pick a good color/steel combo and throw out a limited run, they'll sell.

Is the handle exactly the same as an Urban? Now I wished I picked one up when they were being blown out at knifeworks for $36

No, the DK scales are roughly 3/16ths longer. The end is also more rounded like the UKPK (though wider) vs. the little point on the Urban.

If you make the UKPk shorter from the heel you get the Urban.

If you make the UKPK shorter from the pivot you get the Tern - I don’t have the SPYDK any more to compare but suspect it’s similar. I far prefer this shape to the dumpier Urban handle.

How about a Golden built Metropolitan?

Owned a Spy-DK for a few years & I really liked it. I bought it more as an afterthought... I saw it was on sale at a pretty good discount at my local knife retailer & picked it up for the novelty more than anything else (I hadn't owned any Maniago Spydercos at that point).

I really liked the ergos on it (no surprise, since I'm a fan of the UKPK) & its carryability—I found myself carrying it a lot for in-home utility cutting purposes (opening packages & packets, light kitchen tasks, etc.). And the thin blade stock made it a real slicer, out of the box it was as slicey as a Chaparral. N690Co holds an edge fairly well... I find it comparable to VG-10 & it sharpens just as easily. Not the toughest steel, though... I've had the tip break off of a small fixed-blade N690Co knife (not a Spyderco) after dropping it on a hardwood floor.

The Spy-DK's non-threatening appearance (I bought the orange version) & N690Co's high degree of corrosion resistance made it my go-to lunchroom knife at work. I did end up gifting it to a co-worker this past Christmas... I already have a couple of UKPK's to scratch the slipjoint itch but I'd recommend the Spy-DK alongside the UKPK: I don't mind the two-handed opening & stiffer "walk & talk"... if anything, those features give it a higher "lunchroom acceptability rating" than the UKPK.

I saw Walmart has a few left. I had to do some weird google foo to find them.
