I think so, on the corners of the stones. In the DVD, Sal basically explains how you can sharpen pretty much anything with it.

I have sharpened A gut hook with a the SM...but not all gut hooks are the same (so I would not say you can sharpen ALL gut hooks with it.

I have a the gut hook made by buck. Its sharpened on both sides and is squared off. The SM rods won't fit in there right. I've been using a small block of wood with sand paper.
For the rounded gut hooks, a steel works the best but you may be able to get a SM rod in there. A dowel rod and sand paper will work good too.

Thanks! Will try the dowel rod. It's a Buck and the Sharpmaker won't fit.

Dowel and sandpaper, round Lansky "Mini Dog-Bone" Crock Stick, or Spyderco's Round Ceramic File or Ceramic File Slip Stone.

Agreed, Dowel and sandpaper has worked for me, or anything round the right size.

I have a conical ceramic sharpening tool I got from DMT over 3 years ago and it's been a dream to use to sharpen my 2 gut hooks. DMT also has the same tool in diamond as well.
There are several diamond impregnated and ceramic tools out there which will do a great job of sharpening most gut hooks. But again not all gut hooks are the same.
The one on the original Spyderco Impala model was one of the better ones I've ever seen.

You can sharpen a gut hook with a Sharpmaker rod, if you use the fingernail clipper sharpening technique from the Sharpmaker video. :)
