Not a knife I'd normally be interested in buying but I've been desperately wanting to experience CruWear in SE for quite a while. I'll just consider this a Mule with a handle and sheath included!

I'm torn between the Temp SE and the Jumpmaster 2 - thoughts?

Bite the bullet and get both.

Got mine, it's lightweight, perfectly balanced, secure in the hand, and the blade looks like it'll cut very very well. Sheath is kydex or boltaron or simlilar - top quality.

One thing - the plain edge portion at the tip has almost zero curve to it, it's almost straight. I'd love to know if anyone else's is similar?

Edited to add: Why does Spyderco ship fixed blades with the knife in the cardboard slip instead of in the extremely-secure sheath? Seems like a waste of money. Just curious, I'm sure there's a reason.

Just pulling a total guess out of my rear end.....

A lot of people haven't figured out how to draw fixed blades. They draw them with pressure putting the cutting edge against the inside of the sheath.

This can potentially cut little pieces of the sheath out, and dull or in rare cases even damage the edge.

It's kind of wild how many full grown adults don't realize this is a bad idea, that you should put a little pressure towards the spine to preserve the knife edge and sheath.

This avoids that issue out of the box at least.

Kydex style sheaths also have the potential to scratch the flats of the blade, which is another possible reason. Especially when dirt, sand and other debris get into the sheath.

Tough call if you don't have either. I have the Jumpmaster 2, an incredible knife, and that is the only reason I haven't gotten a Temp SE. I think the Temp is actually a great deal price wise, but the fixed blade laws are too weird in CA to get another, at least for now. Both is the right answer if you can, but in my opinion nothing would beat the Jumpmaster if you only want one.

My daily driver for work is the Jumpmaster 2 - it is without a doubt the best knife I own for brutal use. Case in point - got a chainsaw pinched in a log a while back and all of my wedges were back in my lockup (punter mistake!), so I got my Jumpmaster 2 out, wedged it into the pinched closed kerf and just wailed on its spine with a branch until the saw was loose enough to cut itself free (a ported Stihl MS382 if anyone’s interested). That pretty much sums up the Jumpmaster 2 for me - it’s a beautifully designed beast of a knife for ugly jobs, and it just laughs at hardships.

I’ve got a Temp SE on the way and I’ll be using it almost exclusively for chop and drop green mulching. The thinner stock and full flat grind should excel at that, but I’ll certainly not be using it as a stand in for a chainsaw wedge.

Two very different knives. Buy both

Looking forward to the PEs dropping (and very grateful to those who scour the internet to keep us informed on availability). Tempted while I wait by the SE model, but already owning a couple of the venerable 4.5" Salt fixies in SE, there's really no logical reason for me to buy one.

As for Temperance vs Jumpmaster 2, I've never handled the Jumpmaster, but for me the lower price, better steel (for most purposes), better slicing through thick media, and more comfortable (rounded) handle on the Temperance make it a no-brainer. I think you'd have to be looking for a very specific combination of SE, toughness and corrosion resistance to favor the Jumpmaster. For abusive use in a knife that size, I'd go for one of the smaller CPK or INFI knives. If very high corrosion resistance is a must, then I have a Guardian 4 in MagnaCut which is also plenty tough enough for a 4" blade.

FWIW, I also wouldn't characterize the Temperance as a delicate knife. The relatively fine tip and partial tang mean I wouldn't try to pry with it, but if for any reason I ever needed to baton it on the spine (not at the tip), I'd be pretty confident that the CruWear and 4mm stock thickness would hold up.

I think I'm going to go with the Jumpmaster 2 for my SE fixed blade needs, as my FFG SE needs will be covered by the Mil2 SE whenever its released.

A rare moment of willpower as I do want the Temp (such a nice handle), but I dont use FB's enough to justify both.

Great choice, great rationale. I feel mostly the same, but Native Chief instead of Military in my case. I also want the Temp but don't use fixies enough to justify both. We're on the same page. You're going to be amazed by the Jumpmaster.

I’m sure you’ll love the JM2 - it’s a real joy to use and remains sharp for a surprisingly long time. A lot of my other knives have been gathering dust since the Jumpmaster arrived a few months back, to the point where I’ve started giving some away.
