Wow! A ton of motorcycling memories.
So obviously you are the person to ask, which brand seemed the best made or most reliable? The most fun?
Hard to say, every brand i know of have produced both legends and lemons.. Generally speaking, "The big four" from Japan are the most reliable, and among them (in my personal experience and opinion) i'd rate them
Honda
Yamaha
Kawasaki
Suzuki
The Italians are (also generally speaking) quirky, very nice bikes, often combining the best of the best components-wise
I love my Guzzi because it has tons of character and charm and is still built at Mandello del Lario by lake Como since 1921. It is not the fastest, flashiest by a long shot, but it reminds my of how motorcycles used to feel, before acres of plastic and electronic everything :)
The Hypermotard, being the O.G. 1100 has no electronic aids whatsoever either. No ABS, no traction control, no riding modes, nothing.
EDIT: Here's La Bella from Mandello :)
And the bruiser from Bologna

I love Ducati! They show that a small dedicated team can be the best in the world.

The Toyota 4Runner is a rugged SUV designed for off-road adventures and long-term reliability. With nearly 27% surpassing 250,000 miles, it’s built to endure tough conditions. Reddit threads rave about the 4Runners saying “even with neglect 200k is not really high mileage, [if] it’s broken in, while others advise, “ fluid changes, replace whatever suspension component is worn out, and do the timing belt every 90k.”
Toyota Tundra

Topping the iSeeCars 2024 Study of the Top 30 Vehicles Most Likely to Last 250,000+ Miles is the Toyota Tundra. As one of the longest-lasting trucks on the market, the Tundra excels in both off-road performance and daily reliability. There’s even one owner who has clocked 879,000 miles in his Tundra.

Have you taken the 2017 Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L on trails or off road?

Yup, of the 40k km on the clock since new, I'd say more than 50% were fire roads, forest tracks, jeep tracks, gravel roads.

Thank you for responding!
I might be interested in that kind of motorcycling. All that I have done is road, but I don't like the competition with cars.

I would buy a Toyota LandCruiser but the new models with the new flat style headlamps start around $70,000 and go up from there. WOW!
Maybe if I land a decent job where I end up, I'll trade up to a LandCruiser.

You must have a huge garage / barn for all of those vehicles!
I always thought the KZ 1000 was sexy. I rode a buddies of mine, very torquey.
EDIT: Bobcat? Hahahahahaha..... YES I used to know how to drive one and did so all day in concrete.

I thought motorcycles and autos would be a hot topic on Spyderco Forums? Everyone walks or takes the bus now???
Not really, just MOST normal people just think of cars as transportation and are not into cars etc as a hobby.
That is what they are you know, transportation. Most mature out it the car thing at around 12 to 15 years old.
Not everyone is Jay Leno who can afford to entertain their childhood fantasies in adulthood.
Like knives, almost all people use them, but only a very small percentage are into them.
Jay Leno is the king of car collecting.
I always want to have an auto that can get me out of a spot like being homeless. I have to be able to live in it. Picking up my new car in the next 2 days.

Never had any money, ever. Swung a pick and sledge hammer for 8+ hours a day, never had a dime.
IF, I had $20 million I'd buy a Bugatti. No Bentlys for me. Picking up the most expensive car I ever owned, a Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport Premium.
