For me personally it would even be rather the opposite:
Why spend a lot of money on a knife and then NOT carry, test and use it in any possible task (also "hard use" ones)?

It’s a cool blade shape. Seems like it would be useful if it were a more normal price and wasn’t quite so thick for thickness’ sake.

I guess it also comes back to the very subjective definition of hard use.
I don't like to use any folding knife for what I consider hard tasks, e.g. using tool steel knives in a highly corrosive environment, anything that involves high impacts or a lot of force in any direction, especially lateral force. Still it happens from time to time, because a folding knife is often the only knife I have available, and I always feel bad when using it like this independent of price, because I only carry knives I like.
Then again, my normal use could probably be considered hard use by some, simply because I don't baby my knives.
Wear and scratches are expected at any price.

As for the knife in question, it's not so much the price that puts me off. I think that for some of my use cases both the pronounced belly and ample blade length could come in handy, but I don't think I could pull off the weight and size in pocket.
It would have been fun to give the Subvert a try, but I don't have the time and money to try out everything that might work, so I simply have to filter out the the options that are least likely to be fruitful. At this size and weight, it just seems increasingly rational to opt for a similarly sized fixed blade

Cool thread and I'm very stoked to see so many more detailed pictures with varied angles, not to mention the reflections from Subvert owners. I've been attracted to the model ever since I got back into Spyderco knives (2023), but despite many sale/discount opportunities something has kept me from pulling the trigger. I do feel that I'm a bit closer after reading all of this, but I still think this is a model I'll need to feel in-hand before going for it... at least for now. The pics here of the CF/20CV version look sooooo good. If it is constructed with at all similar quality/details to the similarly manufactured Kapara, then I bet I would have difficulty letting go of it at a shop.

UPS showed today and my new CF Subvert came in . I have been impressed with a few spyderco's, but none to the level of the cf subvert. The fit and finish is as nicely done as any cf spyderco I have felt. on par with the kapara. Pictures simply don't do this knife justice, the fit, feel, and balance are on another lvl. Well done Sal And Spyderco.

If you are serious you need to decide soon because I am pretty sure they are discontinued and will probably get hard to find.

Hold on, I am probably wrong about that. I thought that I saw on a knife retailer website that they were discontinued, but the Spyderco site does not show them to be discon. Sorry about that.

Saw this today at SFO, jus’ sayin’.

This is part of their ‘clearance rack’ of sorts.

Might try calling them.

The orange handle model is $315 on Amazon.

I have the CF version and I have never figured out a real use for it other than sandwich making. It’s cool to look at though.

I like it, I would like it even more, and buy it too, w PB washers.

It carries so much better that way. You need to do some tinkering with the pivot and the screws but totally worth it

Handled one at a gun show yesterday, the gentleman that had it was old, like maybe upper eighties old. It was in a 2’ X 2’ glass case surrounded by several old Colt 1911’s, several old Colt revolvers, and some old bone handled Case Trappers, and…..this huge orange knife that stood out like crazy!

This fellow was so nice, he wanted to tell me everything about this Subvert, especially how expensive they are these days!

My first time ever seeing or holding a Subvert, it’s a big, thick knife, I’d honestly never have a need for one but I’ve gotta say, I think it’s the nicest Spyderco I’ve ever held, the fit & finish, the lockup, the lock release, and the action, oh man the action! And those liners and lock bar, wow, this knife was perfect!

For me, if this knife was somehow a drop point or a leaf shape I would have bought it yesterday!

I have been trying my cf subvert on the cutting board for the last 3 days. My impression is very positive. It cuts as well as my spidiechef on most things, and better at the rest. That huge forward belly is a blessing on a cutting board. And the section forward of the belly, chops veggies slicing and dicing.
Try your subvert for most kitchen food related cutting before writing it off as a what use is this knife. The chef is the only other folder in its class and loses by usable blade length , and flexibility of cutting styles. Just my opinion.
