This is the danger.

One minute nothing is farther from your mind.

And the next you have yourself a new knife.

🙄😀

A wharncliffe Manbug is on my spreadsheet of wants. I've been dilly dallying about ordering one hoping that a K390 PE one might show up at some point. I'm AOK with VG-10 (I do rather like it), though I think a steel with higher edge retention would be a bit more useful in such a small knife.
I like fancy steel too but I like VG-10 etc too. I have Manbugs, Ladybugs, and Jesters in several different steels (ZDP-189, 4V, HAP-40, V-Toku 2, 20 CV, VG-10, and more) They get used quite often but I've never really noticed one being better than another in terms of edge retention. I used them daily until they need a touch up and then I hit them on the Sharpmaker and they're ready for action again. I'm sure there's some difference in edge retention but I'm oblivious to it. Several months ago the Manbug Wharncliffe in VG-10 with coated blade. It's a little cutting demon. I've used it a lot and I don't recall having to touch it up yet. Guess I better look at it. I know I broke down a few boxes with it recently and it did the job with ease. So probably no need to touch it up yet

I "want one" but I wonder how much I would use it.

I have 2 Ladybug Jesters and never carry them. Christmas is nice for opening kids toys

Yes they would!!! It may not be that popular, but I love the laminated steel with the patina built on the exposed core steel and don’t mind the scratches on the cladding.

If you don’t use your Jesters I don’t imagine you’d use this one. I’ve been carrying a K390 Ladybug paired with a larger blade for some time now and I like the combination. The Ladybug can be used in front of the most sensitive work people, and the big blade as/when needed. I also sub in the Squarehead for the Ladybug some days. The K390 beats the tar out of the BD1, but that chisel ground BD1 blade gets crazy sticky sharp.

These little blades do really shine at Christmas! 🎄

I'm currently carrying a Manbug Leaf that is a proto that we made. I carried the Wharnie Manbug quite a bit and was quite pleased with it. I think the Manbug Leaf might be even more useful. The Manbug Leaf is being built now.

I think I'd like the original VG-10 version, a K390 version and a SPY2 version. Once the Mangug Leaf does come out, I'd be interested in your opinions of what variations would be desired.

Hey SpyderGrill,

Jut put one in your pocket for a while and you might be surprised at just how convenient a small sharp ergonomic knife can be

if spy27 is a vg10 remix, have you considered lc200n, spy27, and k390 so there's a little less overlap in steels and a salt version?

green hawkbill salt (lc200n)
mineral blue/green leaf (spy27)
deep blue wharncliffe (k390)

i'd prefer a 🐞 (for obvious reasons), but i'd carry all three of these.

I have Manbug wharncliffe full black since february. Add a Dragonfly pocket clip. Like it very much for city carry, great package opener, far more usefull than I thought. And I had two Ladybugs and sold them. This one is a keeper. Sorry no pics, its PITA to post something😢

As far as variations of the manbug leaf goes I would like some kind of a salt.

Between vg10, k390, and spy 27, I would probably get the Spy 27 and make it my new keychain edc manbug.

What a great improvement. Did not like the skinner shape on original and my Dfly Wharn procludes me from needing a ManWharn but the leaf is a game changer

I can honestly say that a Manbug lead would get me to buy a Spyderco again. I think it would be a nice compromise between the wharncliffe and stock blade shape.

spy27 would be amazing. Better edge retention than vg-10 but just as easy to sharpen probably perfect for a knife this size.

I'm definitely interested. It is about time the Manbug got some love. SPY27 would be great, VG-10 would be fine. I'm ready already and a lot more interested in this than the wharncliffe.

Manbug leaf you say? Not something I was looking for, but definitely something I will try.

I've been searching for a G-10 manbug, and a Pakawood ladybug, so if I could add anything, I would say some upgraded handle options are always welcome. Definitely not necessary for use, just something I enjoy.

Hey Zrows. Just want to add +1 onto your statement about handle options. I too would enjoy some more options. G10 and Ti come to my mind first. A Ti manbug would be an insta-buy for me regardless of blade shape. Although a leaf does sound pretty cool.

Edit: Would love to see the bolstered g10 rerun. Or even a bolstered gentleman version with an upscale material like jigged bone (akin to the delica and Endura bone runs)

I'd love upgraded scales, but the price would be untenable. They would be pricer than Great Eastern slipjoints, but without the build quality.
