Thank you Lance for posting this and describing this and thank you Sal for making those knives available to them.

Wow, I would love to get both the reground Jumpmaster AND the reground Atlantic Salt. Those are beautiful and functional pieces of knife-art.

For boat/fishing work, serrations are one of the more extreme points of contention with views on them being all the way from useless to stellar. Why would you prefer that knife serrated vs a plain edge?

Hey Cliff, I would be happy with pe. Both have their advantages but all things being equal I might choose to carry a pe with a nice toothy finish. The attraction is the H1. This knife never gets cleaned, never gets rinsed with fresh water and never leaves the sheath in my salty kayak. The preference for serrations is simply a result of the huge performance gap between serrated and plain edge h1. That said, this knife is still extremely impressive in its cutting ability and "having to use" a serrated h1 version in order to get acceptable edge retention definitely doesn't seem like a sacrifice.

FWIW, I always have a plain edge knife with me too when I'm on the water. Sometimes I use the pe but its always one of my serrated salts that is sitting in the gunnel for easy access. I cannot remember ever reaching for my serrated knife and thinking "no no, I have to have a plain edge for this task."

Thanks for the clarification.

I would be curious if you would see issues with corrosion with AEB-L/14C28N with a sensible hardening. The problem is in hardening one of the first attributes to go is corrosion resistance because almost anything less than ideal causes it to be reduced.
The preference for serrations is simply a result of the huge performance gap between serrated and plain edge h1.
This was fairly interesting :

My Pacific Salt is out on loan, curious result.

It would be interesting to do a endurance comparison test between a serrated lc200n edge and a H1 one.I give it to H1 steel and I have my reasons for that( just looking at the data sheet of course since I never used a serrated lc200n blade).I know there were long debates on this forum and on other forums on the "plain edge versus serrated edge which one do you prefere" issue.It depends on what one do emphasize.In my case it's ONE STROKE CUTTING POWER.Some say a shaving sharp plain edge has the same if not superior cutting power as a spyderedge.No sir.I did some extensive cutting tests with my SE Salt 1 (because I did not want to ruin my beloved SE Pac Salt moded by Lance).My SE Salt 1 had far superior cutting power than any of my plain edge ones.Some say a plain edge is more versatile.Well, not for me.It is nothing I can't do with my spyderedges but in a critical situation when you need a superior cutting power I prefere to have a SE Salt on me.It's the reason why I allways carry a SE Tasman Salt( sometimes a Harpy) in my back pocket.

We also have a kydex sheath available for the Jumpmaster. Nothing cuts like a Jumpmaster!

Certainly an ideal piece for a bugout bag.

Do you have a picture? Apart from the Caspian the salt sheaths haven't been that good for diving (and the Caspian needed it's straps replaced to work :p )

Very nice of you to send the 2 knives out for testing Sal.

Very cool review, Lance! Thanks for sharing.

It's a little-known fact that serrated H-1 is consistently one of the highest performers on CATRA tests. The Jumpmaster's long serrated edge made it one of the all-time CATRA champions.

When Kristi and I visited the Navy SERE school, the instructors--all expert survivalists with strong preferences on knives--loved the Jumpmaster ergos, but didn't like serrations because they were difficult to sharpen by primitive means. They suggested a Jumpmaster handle with a Temperance 2-style PlainEdge blade. I would still love to see that concept realized as an H-1 bushcraft blade with a Jumpmaster handle.

Stay safe,

Mike

Apparently something like a combination of these two?

A blade similar to this http://www.spyderco.com/pix/products/large/FB26G_L.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

with this handle? http://www.spyderco.com/pix/products/large/FB24BK_L.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have a buddy who works for the police and his job is to equip their members with gear. Well we always get to talking about knives and I've been recommending him to Spyderco for months. He recently got his first, a para military 2 and he loves it. Anyway, I've been telling him to push the Spyderco Delica, Endura or the Rescue model for patrol as it is lightweight, strong and relitively cheap. You should see what they supply them with now, yikes.

So..the Marine Unit was recently looking for a new knife so I told him about H1 and all its glory. Apparently I made an impression as they've decided to supply their marine squad with Jumpmasters and the Atlantic Salt. So now they're carrying both :)

I got a chance to speak with one of the officers today and he was absolutely in love with his H1 blades. He was blown away by how well they cut through rope etc. He was happy to have such quality knives to do his job with. It was just nice to have a small hand in getting some Spyderco knives into the hands of those that need them most.

The Jumpmaster was smaller than I thought, but it's really nice. I might need to get myself one of those someday. I see why you like it Gringo. So it's a start now I need to get them sold on the Enduras!
Most recently acquired: Military 2, Paramilitary 2 Tanto x2, YoJUMBO, Swayback, Siren, DLC Yojimbo 2, Native Chief, Shaman S90V, Para 3 LW, Ikuchi, UKPK, Smock, SUBVERT, Amalgam, Para 3 CTS-XHP, Kapara, Paramilitary 2 M390
Grail Paramilitary 2 M390 X 2! ACHIEVED!!

Nice work, LC. Always good to know that those who really depend on their tools are getting the best.

The Temperance 2 handle and the Jumpmaster handle seem very similar in terms of ergonomics. They almost line up with each other perfectly. I left the in-sheath pic of the Temperance 2 untouched so you can see the similarities.

Here's the Jumpmaster handle with the Bushcraft blade as requested.

I would have to agree, always wanted one, finally picked one up at 2nds sale...I think the only thing wrong was no sheath, knife is perfect and man does it cut....not just the serration factor, this thing push cuts through paper like no knife I've had before, serrated or not....WOW....and it just feels great in your hand....awesome..the ergonomics, blade angel..perfect..
