I think a contest would be a fun thread. I'd have to get staff involved for decisions. Especially Kristi.
Hey Dane,
Isn't there a similar model like that being made by a competitor?

Thanx Brian,
Dane,
That's why. We would not copy their design.

Just a comment: Just the willingness to have this conversation is outstanding. @sal You've taken some risks and collaborated with icon's from the world. I hope this comes to fruition. I'm reminded that Eric's knife, the Charisma took just about 10 years from vision to stock. Best of luck to everyone. @vivi Great thread! @Mushroom I look forward to see what you have to offer.

I know I'm not the 1st to chop and wash a wharnie delica, but I think it would be a great platform to bring k390 back to the wharncliffe with
Skinny micarta, heavy stonewash, k tip or harpoon.

Well, Sal already made me quite happy by producing a straight-spine stretch. I (and others, of course) asked for it back in 2013 or so and they made it reality in 2019. See my vintage photoshop vs. the production photos of the 2019 Sprint.
On the subject of new blade shapes in existing models, I think a Tenacious Jumper would be pretty sweet. I've shared this before, but:
No sketch for the rest, but I'd still really like:
- A frame lock Military (especially with the updated choil of the Military 2)
- Something that competes with the Bugout better (ultralight, 3" blade, neutral handle). The Delica and Para 3 are close but heavier and take up more pocket space. Maybe the Chapparal XL will be this.
- Something that competes with the Sebenza better (sturdy, 3.75" blade, neutral handle, preferably ti frame lock). The Nirvana is about the closest I've seen, but I haven't been able to acquire one.

I had the thought of a titanium Edgerati competing well in that upper tier US-made market. There is not much (any?) titanium from Golden, and this would be a great knife to do it with. Pair it w/ S90V or something else cool, and I bet it would sell really well. I know titanium would be more labor intensive with that scale milling pattern, but the price would reflect it, and people would pay it.
That is a market sector I don’t really dabble in, but I would for a ti Edgerati.

Hi Red Leader,
We also made a prototype Edgerati in carbon fiber which was nice.

Sal,
I haven’t seen that one, but I think I remember Nick saying he saw that version at a trade show.
Do you think a titanium version is doable? I view the Edgerati as a flagship model, and I know it was an important project to you as well. I think it deserves a premium version and I think the ‘enthusiast’ knife market would really enjoy it.
Is US-sourced titanium available? I know it would add to the cost it but it would be worth it.
I have held one and it is marvelous.

Hi Red Leader,
Of course it's possible.
We're sourcing 6Al4V Titanium for my Titanium Totems, so i know we can get it, at least for now.

....
Concerning weight and blade length
the "linerless Delica" = Salt 2 is closer to the Bugout than the Delica.
I actually once made a comparison thread of it being the (better...) Bugout/Minibugout alternative (
viewtopic.php?p=1496689#p1496689). See there for details, here just some:
-
Weight Bugout: 1,9oz, weight Salt 2 also 1,9 oz, weight Delica 2.6"
-
Blade length Bugout 3,24", blade length Salt 2 3.00", blade length Delica 2.9" (yes, the Salt 2 has a longer blade and edge than the Delica, as well as an a bit thicker handle (and some more differences, not relevant here).
Also, just from what I hear the Salt 2 should feel "sturdier" and "less flexy/flimsy" than the Bugout, but I can´t weigh in on that, never really tested a Bugout.
I also did a thread concerning my opinion that Spyderco perhaps should market the Salt 2 more broadly as perfect ultralight hiking knife and BM Bugout alternative (
viewtopic.php?p=1509274#p1509274)
As it is some folks might not really look into it, cause it is rather strongly linked with the "ocean/saltwater" image.
Perhaps even a Salt 2 option in another color and calling it the "Ultra-hiker", "Spyderco ultralight" or whatever and market that one more as a superlight outdoor option could work out... ?

Oh man... I wish they´d have done this straight spine Stretch option with the now discontinued Stretch 1 already....your comparison pic shows what I prefer in that one over the "2" - more cutting edge in a more compact size, the great, short and flat, but with a wide radius choil, the more pronounced bird beak at the handle end...
Also:
- I really like the frame lock Millie idea, though I´d definitely prefer old, more minimal choil
- And a "backlock Tenacious"? I think such a model could actually be in my top three folders ever, if it´d still offer the almost-Endura cutting edge length, like the linerlock Tenacious does...

I'd love to see my Aracari as a production knife in magnacut as a salt series knife, maybe even as a LW FRN if tooling isn't too expensive.
Maybe with some minor tweaks.
I'm into the idea of a design competition, would definitely participate.

Hi Pengubandit,
It's certainly an interesting design. Is that a working model? Is that the one that Vivi was going give a trial run?
We do have a process that we must use for collaboration designs submitted to Spyderco. While your design is interesting, if you are thinking of it as a submission, you would have to contact Peter to begin the process. (
Peterj@spyderco.com).

Hi Sal,
Yeah I have a few working models with minor variations, always trying to tweak the design to be just right. The one in my post above is the on I sent to Vivi.
Thanks for the heads up on the design submission. That sounds good, I'll put together a package for Peter and send it to him later this week.
Definitely looking forward to a design contest whenever that happens. I think it would be really fun!

I already submitted my dream folding knife, that i drew and made as a Spyderco.
But a contest with some lines to follow (a use case, a type of public,...) would be a funun exercice!
