I
am very glad you posted this Fireman. The future is what you said. Advanced composites of ultra hard ceramic materials built in such a way that they are both tough, elastic, and shock resistant. I am sure there will always be a market for carbon and stainless steel and also steel-ceramic mixes. Covalent bonds and ceramics are superb and Spyderco going ahead with that Mule was great.

I am very excited about this new steel. I wonder what a finished folder with it will look like.

Bradford Knives just made a post on their Instagram announcing CPM MagnaTuff? Is that the official name, or did Bradford just make one up for the time being?

His newsletter says they made up the name

I guess that I should mention that Spyderco is also testing this new material.

Will we see a mule team release for this one as well shortly after it’s announced?
Was it produced in a full sized smelt or in small research batch?

Maybe there are a couple new steels? From the initial post I gathered that this one would be geared more towards edge retention than toughness as the MagnaTuff name implies

Hi Electro-Static,
As I understand, it was a limited test batch sent to a number of players for feedback. I don't know who received samples, but I would guess samples went to all of the potential customers for the steel. Shawn received some, and we received some. Shawn has been sharing his information as he comes to conclusions. Personally, I'm glad that Shawn is playing with it and I would bet that he will also come up with some super heat treat specs to get the best performance from the final product.
I should have a piece to test,
Real World, soon. Mort is running lab tests now; CATRA, Corrosion resistance etc.

Thank you for information Sal! Shawn is a treasure to our community, he’s always on the bleeding edge of heat treatment and steel. I’m glad it’s being tested and you will get some in hand.

Just thinking out loud:
I'm wondering what the design goals for this steel were.
My wild guess is something along the lines of stainless 3V.

Closer to K390 but stainless.

I’m confused, the new magna steel is supposed to have similar edge retention as k390 but stainless? I thought this was the tougher version of magna cut.

I'll bet that if/when it's released to the public, Dr Thomas will release a lengthy article describing its design intent. I do seem to recall a chart or two posted that had MagnaWear on them but can't find where those were posted now... maybe they're hiding on Patreon.
If I had to guess, the new steel is an 8-10% vanadium content steel designed with the same principles of MagnaCut to be a stain resistant 10V/K390/Vanadis 8 class steel, but that's just more speculation on my part.

For those who don't know, Hoss (DevinT) is Larrin Thomas's father. He is a master smith and makes some of the best Damascus steel in the world.

Whaaaaat? So it's true? Stainless K390?
What will they think of next?
The 21st Century is indeed a glorious time.

Yes, I find Hoss' patterns are mesmerizing to look at and always keep me wondering, "How did he do that?"
