Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
Not much discussion on the Slym so far. People that have it, what's your take? And folks that have seen reviews/photos and such, what's your take? I don't have one, but I kinda like the knife for it's very EDC friendly size and the short height of the blade. Wish it were thinner BTE from the factory (from what I am seeing in reviews/videos). It's cool that the flipper tab is removable.

Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
It checks all the boxes for me. It's a flipper, a frame lock and a great steel. Looks extremely well done.
I found a Cabellas near my new apartment. Going to go in there this coming week and see if they have one to look at.

That thread was the only reference I found when I looked here .. and glad to hear you are still liking the knife.mikey177 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 9:08 amI shared my thoughts in the Slym In Stock thread.
I still feel the same way about it.
By "not slim", you mean wider blade (spine to edge) and handle? The narrow blade is what I like about this model. Been carrying my Jess Horn spydies more recently and I am really liking now nice they carry and how well they cut.

Taller in height I guess you'd say. I like them to be a bit more hand filling. But it's a super nice knife.

Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
Son has one. The guys at the SFO were very kind about letting me know about an open box one. We were going to get one that we found at the Seconds Sale, but my son used it in a trade for a Techno 3, and that was a fun experience.
He loves the Slym. I'm not really a titanium frame lock kind of guy, but I see a lot to like in the Slym. For it being an integral, the price is good on it.
The detent strength has varied quite a bit on these. Also, perhaps due to the knife being so narrow, the lockbar takes up a good % of the handle on that side, and therefore the hands tend to rest on it a lot, which means hand pressure tends to influence detent strength on that design maybe a little more than most. It is something to adjust to. The crowned spine is icing on the cake.

I have nothing against the design but the blade geometry is a no for me. too thick.

Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
It looks really good, even if it is thicker behind the edge lowering the angle of the blade / Bevel will rapidly overcome that.
Proof of that is by doing and the FACT Spyderco is doing wider bevels and lowering the angle, I have experienced this on the newr knives Mnix2XL, and Bodacious SPY 27 come to mind the S90V needed some help from me.
Oh and yes thanks for the threadI missed this one... but not for long got one incoming.

Yeah, wish it came with thinner blade stock and thin BTE from the factory.
Post your impressions please!
Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
I went back and looked up some of my comments .
I just searched "Slym" in the search bar.
That might help you see what people are thinking .
In a nut shell my take :
I wrote that it was my Christmas Present to myself this 2025 . In other words there was no other knife that I would want more .
I bought it with that in mind as soon as I saw it back in like September or some such .
I wrote that out of the box it was perfect in everyway possible from pivot (free action and no play) to edge and zero rough or unfinished areas .
One of the last things I said was : It is a poem in hand .
So nice !
This basic handle shape is one of my very favorites . Think Case Trapper or Buck 112 .
I've had it for . . . what . . . six months now .
My take has not changed .
So glad I have it !
What would I change ?
Thinner blade . That is my standard answer about any knife . Heck you could hand me a razor blade and I would say "could be thinner " . Well maybe not that bad but close .

Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
I'm debating ordering this knife after reading the other thread posted here. I have X-Large hands and wonder if the handle will be too small...I love the looks of the knife since it reminds me of my Vallatton.Evil D wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 10:48 amsrivats wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 10:31 amThat thread was the only reference I found when I looked here .. and glad to hear you are still liking the knife.mikey177 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 20, 2026 9:08 amI shared my thoughts in the Slym In Stock thread.

Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
Maybe think of it as
I mean I can still remember when I thought of a Case Trapper like that Abalone Trapper , just below the Slym , as a "big pocket knife" .
Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
Yeah it's not like it's unusable, at some point I have to start sweating the details or I'll be buying everything I see

Re: Spyderco Slym - what's the take?
I have one and wish it was actually Slym in the other direction. The handle and the blade are overly thick for the namesake IMO. Otherwise it's a fine knife.
