Knife suggestion: Slipjoint Dragonfly

#1

Post by sage047 »

I've seen some people modifying theirs to be slipjoint and, it's pretty cool that's a thing you can do, but I'd love to maybe see a proper slipjoint dragonfly in the future with a halfstop.

I live in the UK, and have a Magnacut UKPK, and, some people will scoff at this, but to me it's actually a pretty big knife for daily carry.
I still quite like it, but my dragonfly is by far the most EDC-able of my spydercos (mule, manix, Para 3, dragonfly, and UKPK).
It's also a bit of an outlier in that, I have huge hands, and usually any knife of this size would be a 3 finger grip, but I get a nice sturdy four finger grip on the dragonfly which I like.
I've mulled over a manbug or a ladybug, but really it's the exact size and shape of the dragonfly that I appreciate so much, it's more or less my perfect knife. It's juuuust at the limit of what I consider unthreatening, so it's the knife I hand people when they ask to borrow one, and I've never had a negative reaction.

So yeah, on the off chance this is something spyderco have been considering, I think this is a knife that a lot of people would be interested in seeing a slipjoint model of.

I think a slip-it DF is a great idea. I bet they would sell well, especially in Europe.

Have you tries a Lil Native slip-it? The Lil Native is just slightly bigger than the DF. About 3mm longer blade and about 7mm longer OAL.
My collection is ever-changing, with knives coming and going constantly.

I have several Dragonflys . I love looking at them . I think they are one of the most beautiful knives Spyderco has designed .
Heck It was my FIRST Spyderco ! A Green ZDP-189 !
I almost never carry one . Too small up around the pivot and I like a longer handle. Very cool knife though don't get me wrong.
I have size 9 "Large" hands . Relatively small hands in reality .
You would think it would be a good knife for me .

OK babbling aside :
Do you know about the : Spyderco Urban Leaf Non-Locking Knife with 2.61" N690Co Steel Blade and Black Lightweight FRN Handle - PlainEdge - C127PBK

Here are some images next to the UKPK (which is one of my FAVORITE knife designs of all time ; maybe not as beautiful as the Drangonfly but OH BABY I think is as classic and will have longevity like the Buck 110 ).

And both of those next to my favorite Dragonfly the G-10 handled one . Runs a close second with my Green ZDP one though ; I can dither on that call .

My images are less than acurate ; they make the Urban look bigger than it is and the Dragon smaller than it is . I don't know how that is ; sounds contradictory. I recommend you go some place and handle both to see what I mean .

Just to reply to both the above responses. I'll be honest, the main draw for me is just the design of the DF in general, the curve of the handle & angle and placement of the thumb ramp in relation to it just make it feel like the most natural spyderco to hold out of my small collection. And design wise, I love how it looks (and I'm a huge fan of the false edge, the full size native is on my list of future knives for the same reason). Both the lil' native, and the urban are on my list also :) though, of the two, the lil' native is further up there.

Truth be told though, what I really want is to have my cake and eat it too, with a slipjoint DF ideally 😉
In the future I might look at getting mine modified by someone who knows what they're doing, if I can find someone in the UK to do so. But I'd muuuuch rather have a safer and official slipjoint model.

also @Wowbagger I'm jealous of your DF, the ZDP-189 dragonfly is one of my favourites. Mine is the micromelt PD1 variant.

I suppose on that topic, I'd also really love if we got the dragonfly in more steels! Especially Magnamax. I feel like there's an argument to be made for high edge retention steels in those small slicey knives like the DF, that aren't being used to split logs 😁

While I might buy a slipjoint Dragonfly, I’d absolutely buy a Dragonfly 2 Salt in Magnacut or LC200N:
