Future blacked-out Golden Salt models?

#1

Post by zuludelta »

The PM2 Salt & Para 3 Salt with blacked out blades & heavily textured G10 scales are quickly climbing up my favourites list, despite the fact that I don't spend much time in the water.
IMG_20250723_200448_741.jpg
There are real practical benefits to their particular version of the Salt design that make them just great work folders. MagnaCut's combination of extreme corrosion resistance, top-tier toughness (even at high hardness), and S35VN-levels of wear resistance make it an ideal material for a low-maintenance, high performance work cutting tool.

I can come home from a hard shift with my PM2 Salt's blade covered in assorted gunk & fluid residue from cutting all sorts of stuff & I don't have to worry about cleaning it or touching it up as soon as possible & I can just focus on getting washed up, making a decent meal, getting some rest, and just non-knife stuff in general. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy maintaining my tools (it is very relaxing in the right context), but sometimes (okay, a lot of the time), when I get home from a particularly rough day at work, the last thing I want to do is look at—much less clean & maintain—the tools I've been using all day.

That said, I haven't really had any notable issues with corrosion in using my VG10, S30V, S35VN, SPY27, S45VN, S90V, or S110V blades at work, but that's where the other half of the Salt equation comes in: the textured G10 handle scales. I love the extra grippiness provided by the texturing on the PM2 Salt and Para 3 Salt handle scales, and I find the texturing noticeably more comfortable in hand than the protruding ribbing on the Caribbean.

Anyway, so we already have a blacked-out Manix 2 Salt and Manix 2 XL Salt with the textured G10 handle scales in the pipeline. I would love to see this expand to the other Golden models. The Native 5 in this format would be really popular, I imagine, but (and you know this was coming if you're at all familiar with my post history) what I would really, really love is a Yojimbo 2 Salt incorporating the PM2/Para 3 Salt's handle texturing and blade steel. It seems like an eminently sensible development (especially the textured scales) given not just the model's SD design remit, but also its adapted role as a hard-working utility cutter.

I know there is an argument that the proliferation of MagnaCut sort of feeds into this feeling of homogenization of the knife market, but I don't really see it that way. It's a great, well-balanced steel, why not have it as a readily available option in the most popular Golden models? It's really no different from the time when S30V and later (and more comprehensively), S35VN, dominated the market.

Thoughts?

I haven't tried the textured G10 PM2 or Para 3, as I am waiting for the Manix 2 version to be released.

That said, I have a Caribbean and find the texture on its G10 okay, so I guess I would be in for a blacked-out Yojimbo 2 Salt.

I wonder though if there is enough of a market for it, since the Seki wharnie Salt models actually got discontinued.

I absolutely love the M2 Salt along with my blacked out Pacific models . Having the M2 Salt and the CF Sprint it has surprised me how much I appreciate the model but the Salt for me is such a great knife for my use . I have also been beating the drum for a blacked Stretch XL Salt model in PE and SE . MG2

the manix is my long time favorite knife and i have a few that i've customized and really enjoy carrying. however, i barely carry anything else since i got my military 2 salt. its just that good.

as far as the yojimbo goes, i've been asking spyderco to salt the self defense knives for years. salt versions of all the waved knives would be amazing. salt versions of the yojimbo and yojumbo...? yes please! i'd love a yojumbo with the same treatment as my military 2 salt.

i've also been asking for more blacked out salts for years. i know a lot of spyderco fans hate on coated blades and think satin is the absolute best thing ever, but a blacked out blade has a purpose too. they might look scarier to people, but they are also more discrete, so they don't get noticed as easily. and, especially in the water, not having something shiny on me is much nicer. i'd rather not give off lure vibes in the ocean.

We've seen upcoming colored DLC options that will eventually be coming out so there's also that to look forward to along with potential DLC/Salt variants (I would assume including fully colored DLC Salts?).

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest the Caribbean's scales are uncomfortable, just that the PM2 Salt's are more comfortable without giving up much, if any, traction. Probably more pocket hem-friendly, too.

I'm hopeful that the limited appeal of the Salt 2 Wharncliffe models isn't a predictor of sentiment towards a theoretical Salt Yojimbo 2. My opinion on the Salt 2 Wharncliffe (and the similarly discontinued Delica 4 Wharncliffe) is that they didn't catch on in a big way because the standard Salt 2 (and Delica 4) blade shape already comes with an edge with minimal belly, so the wharncliffe versions didn't really offer enough differentiation (for the cost) for people who already owned a standard Salt 2 or Delica 4.

I've got the Military 2 Salt on my short list of knives to eventually get. I don't really have much use for a 4" folder (I tend to carry a 4"–6" fixed blade if I need something larger than an Endura), but I've managed to convince myself that I should get a Military for reference purposes ha ha

Never thought of the lure effect a satin blade might have in the water, that's interesting. And yes, a blade that doesn't catch the eye of people around you can be very important, not just in a hypothetical SD situation, but also in regular work or social situations where you have to use a knife around people who are skittish around such things, or if you just don't want to call attention to the fact that you are using a knife, period.

I remember Eric showing previews of their in-development proprietary coating in various colours in some trade show YouTube video last year. They definitely look interesting. And I hope they're just holding out on expanding the blacked-out Salt line-up to encompass the other Golden models until the proprietary coating is fully ready (one can dream!).

I agree about Magnacut, and would be fine with it replacing S30v as the base steel. S45 was a steel no one asked for, and I was surprised it took over instead of 20cv. Regardless, Magnacut has exceeded my expectations, and I'm excited to try Magnamax.

Bring on the blacked out Bodacious Salt!

there's nothing that would make me happier than seeing Spyderco make blacked out salt versions of all their models I like, the same way they made the military 2 salt. to me it's the perfect execution of the model.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Why coat magnacut. Aesthetics only?

Seemes redundant from a corrosion standpoint but I am genuinely curious.

It's more about light discipline for those that need that sort of thing, and also just because people like it. MagnaCut is also apparently not rust PROOF so every little bit helps.

I'm certain it's been thought of before, but I sure would love to see some unique Salt models released as Sprint runs.

Keep in mind, I don't know a single thing about the knife business -- I'm just a knife nerd who wants as many Salt options as possible.

They’ve done some Salt sprints in the past, such as the Rock and Spyderchawk ;)
