DLC itself does not help with corrosion resistance

It does not prevent corrosion but it definitely helps to resist it.

How can that be if it’s porous?

My results over the past decade of testing indicate the opposite is true

Best knife in the Spyderco catalog IMO!

My favorite version of the Military is the Knifeworks exclusive. It was Carbon Fiber and Titanium with a Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanism and S90V blade. I love the R.I.L. on the Military.

https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... usive/1189

Amazing how this one is really not much heavier than the linerlock versions (4.8 vs 4.5)
The carbon fiber makes a big difference. The all cf version is down at 4oz.

I regret selling my m390/cf model for that reason. Wasn't a fan of the RIL Ti/CF version and don't regret letting that one go though.
Yeah you and me both. I'm EDCing my M390 Millie today. It's been my favorite of all the Military models I've ever owned so far. I just love that M390 blade steel. It's been the best C-36 Military model I''ve ever owned and I have used it on a lot of demanding jobs. The XHP version is awesome as well.
I would love to see the C-36 Military done in more selections of Bohler-Uddeholm blade steels. The C-36 Military and Para2 models are thee best for introducting newer/better blade steels IMO.

This is very interesting and I appreciate information.

Could you also speak to DLC as a relates to helping rust resistance?

NONE/ZERO/ZIP of the Family of Vacuum Deposited Coatings ARE GOOD Corrosion Barriers, That being said, these coatings can’t rust because these is no presents of Iron/Ferrite in the coating itself.. It’s a coating only 2-4 Microns in thickness with microscopic pin holes, corrosion can start there and on the cutting edge migrating under the coating causing rust…

The Benefit of coatings for corrosion is they absorb oil like a sponge, Maintain your knife, rinse it off from time to time and reapply a coat of oil, wipe dry and you’ll have Great Corrosion Protection…

We all want a knife that, Won't Rust, Light Weight, Stays Sharp forever, with the latest materials.. It doesn't exist, But were working on it... almost forgot.. For Under $100.00 Made in the USA...

whoever wrote that had a much different experience than I did.

there's another dlc corrosion experiment. note the uncoated areas showed more rust vs the coated.

that author has also never heard of my favorite pocket knife, the pacific salt :) It'll stay sharp for a couple of months and was made in japan, otherwise meets that criteria ;) siren comes close too outside the price!

I really can’t wait for a K390 Military. I might stop buying knives after that.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Anecdotal I know, but I've had a DLC M4 blade develop a fair amount of rust and I live nowhere near a salt environment. Perhaps I have toxic pockets.

I think all that rust is bleeding from the pivot area.

you need to learn to maintain your knives bro ;)

In all seriousness, my m4 manix xl experiments proved to me 2 things, based on my history with M4 steel. dlc doesn't make m4 rust proof - but it makes it a **** of a lot more corrosion resistant than bare m4.

using my m4 chiefs side by side - one dlc, one satin - same thing.

i see comments about dlc knives forming rust under the dlc. try the smell test. smell a corroded carbon blade then a clean stainless blade. sounds stupid I know, but corroded carbon blades have a distinct smell to them.
