A larger Dragonfly
A larger Dragonfly
I haven't seen anything other mention of this on the forum. The Dragonfly has been around since 1994, and other than an evolution to the Dragonfly 2, there really isn't any other real spiritual successors to it. I realize that the ergonomics of the Dragonfly is the main reason why it is shaped and sized the way that it is, but follow me for a moment here. What if a larger Dragonfly, let's just call it the Dragon, were to have the similar ergonomics of being mostly finger held, the spine just large enough to kiss the meaty portion of the palm. It would maintain the same arrowhead leaf blade shape and with an edge length of no larger than 2.5 or 2.75 inches tops and maintain a thin stock. Cutting with it should feel the same, a crank cut of thumb and fingers pushing the blade into the cut. I think the reason the Dragonfly cuts so well is because there is the positive feedback of having the knife mostly in your fingers, more finesse in a finger tool. Once a knife becomes part of the palm and hand, it becomes a gross motor tool, losing some of the fine detail control. Being able to make a cut with your fingers where other knives required elbow grease would be a true testament to how sharp a knife a company could make. It wouldn't look dramatically different in size, but the best part is that the Dragon would deploy one handed a lot more comfortably. Would anyone else want a slightly larger Dragonfly?

Thanks, none of my searches used "XL" so I think that's why I didn't see anything. Also, waiting 30 seconds on this forum to do another search gets to be really long when looking for something you can't quite verbalize concisely.Wartstein wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 3:33 pmYou might like these threads:

i still think the manix 2 lw is a good substitute for a dragonfly xl. it also happens to be pretty much perfect.

I think the Caly 3 is a 3” Dragonfly.

Re: A larger Dragonfly
The Chap LW is pretty close to a Dragonfly XL, as well. I guess it depends on what size you think of as XL for the Dfly.

Yes, in many cases it is actually better to do a google search and not use the forum search function (see here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=88976#p1498578).
Anyway, it is totally fine to start a new thread on topics that have been discussed before imo. Happens all the time.

Re: A larger Dragonfly
I like the Dragonfly as it is and it fill a niche in the lineup perfectly. If I want larger I am going to get an Urban LW, Cat, or Chaparral. If it had a 2.49 inch blade, I might be interested as there are no backlocks in that range that I recall.

A 3 incher Dfly would be my dream pocket knife. Enough said.

I'll draw one up and see what it looks like. I'm sure ergos would have to be modified. The D'Fly was a challenging design to fit a knife in between the Ladybug and the Delica.

Thank you Sal for even considering the idea. Mark my words, this is going to be a hit.

Re: A larger Dragonfly
Fantastic idea, great little platform, one in lc200n would be awesome.
Re: A larger Dragonfly
Fun fact, when I first saw a picture of the dragonfly, there was nothing next to it to give an idea of size. I thought it was a much larger knife.
I was really taken with the design and look of the knife. When I found out it was smaller than I thought, I still wanted one. It was my first Spydie.

Re: A larger Dragonfly
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely think a larger DFly would/will be an awesome knife (I'd most likely get one) and it's great that Sal will at least look into it. Especially having another Spydie with under 3mm blade stock would be nice (2.5mm, I hope this would not be changed in a "XL")
But: Even more so I'd hope for a Chaparral XL (about PM2 size). A DFly XL will somewhat be in the range of the already existing Chap, Urban, UKPK, Native... while a mid sized thin bladed ffg model (2.00 mm like the Chap) is missing in the line up (Centofante is hollow/sabre).

Im just wondering when we'll start hearing requests for a Ladybug XL and a Manbug XL!

Re: A larger Dragonfly
This thread hurts my heart.
The Dragonfly is perfectly sized for 5th pocket carry and real-world EDC. There are plenty of knives out there that occupy the next size up category. I think an XL version would lose some of the ergo and utility magic that have made it so successful. It’s useful BECAUSE of its size, not in spite of it.
With that said - I have smaller hands, so if an XL version duplicates the ergos for some of you gorillas then why not.
Edit: I just saw sal mentioned that the ergos would have to be modified. Y’all are trying to kill the golden goose.

Re: A larger Dragonfly
I love my Seki knives. I typically carry an Endela, Endura, or Straight Spine Stretch. The Delicas are scattered around the house. My Dragonflies I carry more in the summer with gym shorts or my H1 Dragonfly on my swim trunks. I have Pacific Salts and Delicas in the vehicles. Dragonfly Hawkbills in my FAKs. A new Manbug on my Keychain. A Spyderhawk for yardwork. Etc, etc. I think I have all of my small-medium size needs covered between these models, and the new Stretch XL with cover me on larger knives.
I'd personally rather see the amazing Dragonfly package used to house more different blade shapes. The Dodo-fly and Cricket-fly are two I will never shut up about until they see the light of day! I also think a Tanto-fly would be a handy little piece and something my 8 y/o son would love as the Dragonfly and my chinese mini-tanto are the two knives he wants of mine. I'd also like to see a PE Hawkbill Dragonfly.
IF a Dragonfly XL came out I would 100% buy one to check it out (assuming it keeps the spine and choil jimping and the boye dent), but I personally would rather see the four alternate blade shapes I mentioned in the current Dragonfly model before that.

CRU-CARTA THE SEKI MODELS! AND BRING US THE DODO-FLY!
Re: A larger Dragonfly
A 2.49 inch back lock would be a nice addition to the line up. It doesn't need to be a Dragonfly, per se, though.
Side note. A Dfly XL would totally be called a Meganeura: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meganeura
Re: A larger Dragonfly
As I said in my previous thread, I love the Dfly2 as much as the next guy and the XL DFly should not replace it. They can co-exist so what is all the drama ?! We have a Caly3 and a Caly3.5 and I hear no one complaining about this.
