Serrated K390 Want Get AS Sharp AS VG-10?
Serrated K390 Want Get AS Sharp AS VG-10?
I have a VG10 serrated endura that will get razor sharp using the white stones in the sharpmaker. I have a Endela serrated in K390 that I use the diamond stones in the sharpmaker to sharpen. I use the ede of the stones to sharpen both knives. I can't seem to get the K390 blade as sharp, yet. It won't cut card board as easy. Any suggestion? Do I just need to sharpen the K390 blade some more where the teeth will be finer? I have come to love spyderco serrated blades.

Are you fully removing the burr? Get a loupe and see what is happening at the edge perhaps?
Re: Serrated K390 Want Get AS Sharp AS VG-10?
I don't feel one on the other side.

Check your angle I have with a digi angle finder and found them at 20 degrees plus sharpie will help. That and use your ceramics afterwards.

I agree with Srivats,
Often one can "see" what one cannot "feel". A 10X - 12X loupe will better show the issue.

It’s been suggested that you take 3 strokes on the edge side and one stroke on the back edge. It’s not a one for one or only sharpening the front side.
Use the 20° angle.
And as everyone has said use a marker and loupe to see where the stones are hitting.

VG10 does not have the high carbide count K390 does, you need the Diamonds or CBN to work the carbides it also of course works the steel.
Near as I can tell the ceramics work the metal in the steel mostly and gets rid of some of the jaggy toothy-ness in the edges finish.
So just like you can tune the micro serrations on a PE the same is true with SE.
Experiment I have gotten some crazy edges with Serrated going up to the ULTRA fine rod, depends on the steel and how you like your cutting feel.

There is A LOT of vanadium in K390 .
Maybe a bit of a very light strop action . Wrap some super thin leather around a triangle rod . Just a hint of some 15,000 diamond dust on finger tip wiped on the leather .
Use the rod hand held ; edge trailing . Triangle rods fit in the Edge Pro Apex to . ((remove the brass spacer tube )).

I’ve never felt like I could get my serrated K390 LeafJumper as sharp as my 8/10 other serrated knives in different steels, but it still cuts like crazy, go figure?

Fit in the Hapstone RS also.

Just a guess, but could it be the case that the corners of your diamond rods are already worn out too much and don´t "cut" well enough any more?Razor G43 wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2026 11:12 amI have a VG10 serrated endura that will get razor sharp using the white stones in the sharpmaker. While the white rods you use for your VG10 Endura SE seem to last pretty much forever (just have to be cleaned from time to time), my CBN rods do wear out noticeably, especially on the corners, and just from what I read here this apparently happens even a bit quicker with the diamonds...?

I even like to go with something around a 7:1 to 10:1 ratio.. and keep the back edge stroke pretty "flat", just enough to remove the burrWilliamMunny wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2026 6:50 pmIt’s been suggested that you take 3 strokes on the edge side and one stroke on the back edge. Re: Serrated K390 Want Get AS Sharp AS VG-10?
Use the diamond rods on the K390 first, then use the ceramic rods on the K390.
The diamond rods are courser than the brown rods which are courser than the white rods.
If you only use the diamond rods, the resulting edge will be quite course.
With serrations, I prefer to use the fine rods and let the serrations provide the bite.
WIth K390, I'd try using the diamonds first, then the ceramics to refine the edge.

Thanks for all the good advice! I touch the edge with the white spyderco stones and now the knife is a razor like the VG10 one!
