Real world Magnacut performance. A+

#1

Post by jmj3esq »

I was fortunate enough to harvest 2 deer in the past month here in Indiana. I used my new Spyderco Maganacut Mule to field dress the deer. Last year I used a Manix 2 S110V and the result was a disaster as It literally chipped the blade all over. Not this time! I used this new Magnacut Mule on 2 deer, cleaned it up, and it still looks brand new! Not a chip or hairline on the knife after gutting 2 deer. I’m impressed and sold, as Magnacut is at least as tough as they say. It’s still hair shaving sharp as well. Take my word and other’s words for it, Magnacut is a tough and relentless steel perfectly suited for the outdoors and hunting conditions. A+!

Looks like a well placed shot too, I am really big on that...Great pix man. The MagnaCut and MagnaMax steels are both some very special steel for us all in the future.

It is great that Magnacut works for you - my jury is still very much undecided. I bought the Native 5 Salt PE in Magnacut about a year ago because of my love for kayaking.

During weekends I work as a volunteer at an animal rescue center so my cutting tasks consist of opening and breaking down multiple carboard boxes of food and cat litter and then opening the respective bags (lots of them). The Magnacut dulled very quickly. Compared to my Delica K390, which simply scoffs at this type of this job and still retains its working edge for a very long time, the Magnacut was a big disappointment.

Whether the difference in edge retention is attributable to the Delica's blade geometry being superior or because of its thinner blade stock, I wouldn't know. What I do know is that Spyderco's S30V (2 x Dragonflies and Subvert), K390 (Dragonfly, Ladybug and Delica) and PD#1 (Delica) all exhibited vastly superior edge retention to Magnacut.

Very nice. Was there any difference in how you sharpened it vs S110V?

I started with the factory edge on both as they were extremely sharp from the factory. S110V is way to brittle to be dinging it off bones and cutting through a sternum. I Had to reprofile the entire edge as it was chipped so bad. Take it from me, S110V is not made for or gutting a deer.

I was actually blown away after by the Magnacut after I cleaned all the guts, blood, and fat, off the knife and it was still spotless and razor sharp. I make a cut from the bottom of the sternum to the top and its all Cartlidge and bone and it extremely tough to do without a tough blade. I've broke more than one tip off cheaper knives doing this and like I said it destroyed my S110V. My Magnacut Mule is the perfect deer hunting knife!

I wonder if a production fixed blade in Magnacut is in the works. Sounds like a missed opportunity if not. The leaf shape enuff and enuff 2 come to mind. Having a SE option would be very cool too.

All the hype I saw about magnacut kind of turned me off the steel. When I tried it I understood the hype was real though. It's a great steel in every possible category. It has become a personal favorite very fast. Rust proof for me so far, about S30V levels of edge retention which has always been sufficient for me, very tough, great sharpening response - what's not to like?

Regular production, even.
Sounds like a winning recipe, but I hate chasing sprints. Too few trickle out to EU dealers and shipping from US has become too expensive to be a realistic option.
