Sal, how far behind is the hp Delica project ?

In all honesty I started to feel that this project turned into a mirage. I really hope it’s still alive though. A high hollow grind crazy thin bte Delica might be the ultimate edc for me. Why not in SPY27 ?!

Also still excited for this one!
(And actually fine with VG10... )

Could be waiting ages for a VG10 knife then.
…In the meantime you could buy a Spy27 Delica and get the grinding work done by an independent.

Glad to hear this is still simmering on a back burner. Looking forward to it.

Glad to hear the project is still alive. Sharpened my Superblue Delica yesterday. It has a thinner grind that I appreciate.

Is the model set in stone? I personally wouldn't be opposed to a change to something made in Taichung, maybe a Chaparral? Maybe do it in Golden with a Native?

While we're waiting, and speaking of Taiwan, have a look at the Watu, the “Taiwanese HP Delica”...
In my opinion it is better than a Delica in most respects, and a scalpel of note. I find it hard to imagine how a thinner ground Delica in VG10 could improve on it.
Tips in the same order as above

I totally believe that the Watu must be a great slicer (just wish it came with a frame lock like its larger sibling Chokwe).
But: A
high hollow grind in the same 2.5mm stock imo is something different than ffg...(both have their pros and cons of course)

We made some changes so it's still a work-in-progress, We'll pick it up again. Sounds like some wish to share the experiment with us?

To me this is as much a community social experiment as anything else, because it's not hard to find thin blades that slice well, just go cut a box with a utility blade and it'll out slice a Delica all day long. It's an opportunity for everyone to use and compare the same tools and share their experiences.
Thin or thinner blade stock is not enough, there's still the blade grind to consider. There are a lot of low quality kitchen knives out there with ~1mm thick blades that still don't slice as well as they could because they don't actually have a blade grind, they just have an edge bevel ground onto that 1mm blade so they end up thicker behind the bevel than some pocket knives. The blade grind is going to make or break this idea.

Theres a thin-stoked, hollow grind, VG10, Seki made, back lock already available it’s called the Centofante. I believe it’s been updated with screws now too. Not the same I know, but similar.
Speaking of which, will the grind be similar geometry to that of the Centofante, or is it intended to have a higher hollow grind and thinnner behind the edge thickness?
I heard mentionings of an “Appleseed” Delica convex grind too. - Is that still in the works?

It is a shame that the watu was discontinued. Brilliant knife.
That said, my hope is that the HP Delica will be geometrically different from the Watu in a couple of ways. The first is that I don't think the Delica needs a thinner blade stock, or a thinner tip, as the watu has, but rather what matters to me is a thinner behind-the-edge thickness (BTE). Interestingly, the Watu, despite its thin blade stock and distal taper, has about the same 0.020" BTE as a standard PM2. Now, one could just buy a Watu, or a delica for that matter, and pay $80-100 to have it reground by a pro to 0.008" behind the edge, but I suppose that is exactly what we are hoping to get from a factory knife with the HP delica. I do think once I can pause buying new models I will just get a used VG10 delica and send it to a maker to have it reground to my desired BTE, or heck maybe just try doing it by hand on a diamond plate and hand sanding to finish. Not sure.

Had a Centofante, definitely a great perfomer already.
But yes, I´d hope indeed that the HP Delica blade will have a higher hollow grind (less "sabre" portion) and more tapering going on.
So much so, that it should be kind of a more specialized superslicer for true cutting tasks, and not so much for "harder use" anymore.

Again, even with the Centofante being a hollow grind, if it's ground on the thicker side at the edge bevel, then it's only thinner than a FFG from above the bevel to the top of the grind, and that difference is going to be so small you may never notice it. It needs to also be ground thinner than what we've already had to see the real benefits.

They key is ''thickness behind the edge'' IMO. You can't beat a high hollow grind at 0.015'' bte and sharpened at 10 degrees per side. That is what the hp Delica project is all about...or at least that is what I hope for and imagined. I really hope this project will go on as intended.

High hollow Chaparral? YES PLEASE :)
