Destroyed Pants

#1

Post by WilliamMunny »

I wear suits a lot of time for work but my Spyderco knives tend to destroy my pocket. I carry tip up front right pocket. I also tend to carry 3” (Para 3, Native 5, Sage 5, etc.) knife while in a suit. I never have the issues in kakis or jeans.

Does anyone have the same issue? Has anyone found a way to save your pants?

I have had many pants over the years end up like that. The best solution I’ve found is to carry something with a smooth handle like the Kapara. The other option is to sand down about a quarter sized area of the handle where the clip sits, or add something smooth like jb weld.

When I wore suit pants/wool slacks at work I always carries a smaller knife in bottom of pocket. Never a clip for this reason. Those pants are not cheap.
Mainly sub 3 inch blades such as delica with the clip removed.

First failure of dress pants was always wearing through seat of pants. I sit a lot at work :(

I sanded an area about .625" right where the pinch point is on the scales. I did this in a big hurry so it's more of chewed than sanded.

When I wear my dress pants that are all about looking good, more so than made to use like most of my other pants, this is the Military 2, I carry.

It solved the issue for me, but I ain't doing this to my other knives, I just toss the pants and buy new ones anymore. But this does tone down that aggressive peel ply texture on the scales, and only at the point that was chewing up the pocket.

Image

If you were to do this in a nice oval shape and even, it would look a lot better than my chewing I did here...

The other thing here is to release some of the pinch press of the clip a little, I just prefer my clip tight.

I do some office droning. Agree with smooth (or at least smoother) handle recommendation. Roadie XL, UKPK, Centofante 3 (if not a hard 3in rule... its close enough).

Honestly I picked up a CQI screw together FRN Centofante 3 in April and it has been my office work/around the house/yard work EDC at least 80% of the time since then. It has a nice light textured handle, great ergos, and is plenty durable for anything I do daily. Thin blade, good slicer. Space efficient, affordable. I was hesitant for a long time because of the pointy thumb ramp but I have had no issues with it snagging or causing issues with grips.

the centofantes are definitely an overlooked gem in the line-up. great for the role you put yours into.

FRN Delica with clip removed, carried deep in pocket is what preserves my dress slacks. FFG for lowest weight.

Knife pouch on your belt? IWB? Inside waist band carry about your 2 o’clock at an angle or at your 3. Done it for years with no issues. You can always use a pocket watch chain and attach to a belt loop and let the knife sit in the pocket without the clip. If you use a vest, even better and use the vest pocket. A neck knife solution is always there too. Maybe someone can make a cam clip with Spyderco hole pattern. I’m sure those would be popular. Perhaps mod a Utili clip slim 2.2 and drill the Spyderco clip hole pattern to skip the sheath part or use a utili clip with a pouch

I'd stick with smooth scales for dress pants. Polished G10, Micarta, titanium.

Thankfully my office is casual only, you'd look weird if you wore a suit but when I do need to dress nicer I usually carry my polished Ouroboros. This will slide in and out like silk.

For work I only wear a suit a handfull of times per year, but never have a knife in the pocket. Bulky items don't look good in a suit anyway, so I carry a small pouch with a knife, phone, keys you name it.

G10 goes tru everything. I recently fixed these jeans with superglue and a few stitches. Pants are not that old but some knives just destroy pants.

I'm also looking at a pocket organizer like Viperade offers or the Maxpedition platy. Keeps eveything in place. Still not something I put in my suit pockets though.

Either carry without a clip, or only knives with a wire clip since the retention doesn't seem to be as strong with those. Or buy more pants to rotate haha!

You can put a lanyard on them and just drop them in the edge of the pocket leaving the lanyard out. Then just use the lanyard to draw the knife, don't even have to remove the clip, and the lanyard will help keep the knife in the back corner of the pocket as if you were using the clip.

It was how we carried our knives before we had clips, least I did, I never liked having to fish my knife from the bottom of my pocket with a greased up paw.

So basically I grew up with a lanyard on my knives and I still use one on all mine that I carry to this day. I also enjoy making my on lanyards out of paracord these days, but back in the early days when I was a kid I used the leather boot laces, they are more challenging to make look good, since the are square cut, but once you spend the extra time to braid the leather up they do look really great.
The lanyards aren't for everyone though, I know most of you younger guys use your knives without the lanyard and have grown up this way so I get it lol.

But if your dealing with the pocket getting chewed up the use of the lanyard will help keep your knife parked were you want it and it's really easy to draw the knife with the lanyard. Just say'n lol... you can even leave the clip on.

In the photo of the OP, the wear does not appear to be from a clip. That would be on the inside of the flap fabric. The shown wear is opposite the clip at the end of the handle. Some possible causes: not having smooth scale material, not having a smooth end of handle design, or even the repeated rubbing of a thumb nail on that area when removing the knife. If the latter, some better nail care to keep them smooth and not sharp or rough may help reduce wearing on that area. (I prefer the Crystal Glass nail files from the Czech Republic, purchased from Strings By Mail.) When I wear dress pants with less durable materials, I prefer a little smaller knife with a smooth scale dropped in the pocket (even if that knife has a clip).

I almost never wear a suit, and wear dress slacks only very rarely. When I do, I carry a knife that is very thin and light, unclipped, down inside of my RF pocket like a traditional pocketknife; usually something like an FRN Delica, or my UKPK Salt. I keep the clip on the knife, because I find Spydercos much easier to open one-handed by using the clip as a purchase point for my fingers to hold securely. I would never clip a knife to dress slacks.

Correct the wear is basically on the show side of the knife. I think it just may be the knife gets pined to the back of the pocket with the clip and movement, sitting, etc makes the fabric at that corner pull and rub, basically where out.

I also carry my phone in my right front pocket so I tend to not carry it lose as they would fight for space.

pants getting destroyed from sharp nails?

geeze.

maybe just find some more durable pants.

I have pairs of these that are going on ten years old now that have no significant wear from knives. I wear them hiking, camping, working, etc.

Also own 15-20 year old wrangler work shorts that have a knife clipped to them every time they're worn, haven't thrown out a pair yet.

Jeans seem to wear a lot more easily, which is among the many reasons I stopped wearing them.
