Anyone tested VG XEUS mule yet

#1

Post by PM2Josh »

Just wondering if anyone has bought and tested a Mule VG XEUS yet? There is no cut test or real world use of this steel dexpite coming out in 2022.

Come October 1st I am debating between the AEB-L and VG XEUS for my first Mule. I don't know which one to try. And I can't afford to buy both.

HIC is off the table due to sharpening difficulty and brittleness.

SPY27CPM is also off the table due to already owning it on my Military 2.

And I doubt if I will get the chance to purchase a different blade steel Mule due to being out of stock and selling out in minutes.
I wish Someone who has tried the VG XEUS Mule could chime in and tell me if the edge retention and toughness surpassed VG-10. Or experienced issues sith it.

I am starting to think no one has even bought a VG XEUS Mule since it's inception.

I don't have one man, or I would have said something and I know nothing about that steel.

Some bought the VG XEOS. But I’m not sure any of the big testers bought it yet. I got both mules and I bought a 2nd AEB-L mule.

Personally I’d go with the AEB-L especially since @Deadboxhero /Shawn Houston did the heat treat formula for it. The AEB-L mule was heated to a high hardness giving it better edge retention. When carving wood I felt that this mule kept a sharper edge longer than the VG XEOS. I would guess this might have reduced its toughness a little but I don’t think it could be as low as VG10.

According to the limited info we got on VG XEOS it’s suppose to be VG 10 with better rust resistance. I don’t know much about VG 10 because my wife claimed the RockJumper SE I had as her personal cardboard slayer. I will say I quit oiling this mule because it just doesn’t seem to need it. So far mine hasn’t rusted at all. I use it as a yard knife. This mule will make you feel like rock star when it comes to sharpening it. It is one of the easiest steels to sharpen.

So for edge retention and toughness I’d go with AEB-L. For ease of sharpening and rust resistance I’d go VG XEOS. This is just my un-scientific opinion.

Hope this helps

It was an experimental steel made by Takefu, which makes VG-10. To my knowledge, it as not been used in a production knife. Truly a Mule Team Experiment. We haven't gotten much feedback on it?

There are a couple of threads for VG Xeos on the mule team forum. The link to the long one is below.

My VG Xeos sharpens easily and keenly. It seems to have a great microstructure. I use it in the kitchen and was a little surprised to find rust under the scales, but waxed them before reassembling. No rust on the blade. I had a tiny chip or rolled edge but it was easy to touch up.

Based on Larrin's studies you should find VG Xeos corrosion resistance much better than AEB-L, if that is a concern for you. Toughness of AEB-L would be better. The edge retention is more subjective and even hard AEB-L may not be that different than VG XEOS with a lot of carbides in what seems to be a good microstrucure.

I like my Magnamax mules better than VG Xeos and don't have an AEB-L since I prioritize stain resistance. The Magnamax knives seem tougher and with much better edge retention. I dont have any good comparison for corrosion resistance yet. My Magnacut Manix 2 Salt is great in all respects. I dont mind touching up edges.

Thank you for the additional information. Very interesting to know. Wish I could afford another one, but I can’t currently. Maybe if they’re still around for a while longer then maybe I can get another.

I really enjoy my AEB-L Mule. Of every steel I've tried, it's taken the second best edge only after a Buck with a hollow ground 420HC blade with a ~12° edge. I highly recommend it!

So, about that rumored straight edge razor.....
