My wife, kids and I were at the annual Back to School Picnic for the homeschool families and I overheard my wife ask if I had a knife so we could open some boxes of hamburgers. Another wife said β€œdon’t worry, I have my keys” and started to open boxes with those.

Our Shipping/Receiving coordinator uses a 1" putty knife to open boxes sealed with tape, and metal banding snips for anything else. Blows my mind!

Back in the '90s, I was in a trash school, and a very heavy set woman was trying to open a little plastic snack bag, and having difficulty. I offered to hand her my bone-handled medium Case stockman with the sheepsfoot blade open (handle-first). With a look of disdain, she very coldly said, "No. I don't need to use your KNIFE."

Apparently, using a little pocketknife to open a difficult package was beneath her dignity. So in her most dignified manner, she then proceeded to use her teeth, vigorously shaking her head side-to-side, like a furious puppy attacking daddy's slipper.

you think that's bad?

I take the time to hand sharpen all the house knives at any kitchen I manage.

Then I turn around and catch cooks and dishies breaking down cardboard with a freshly honed slicer...

The more I think about this, the funnier my response becomes--far funnier and far less appropriate.

Back when I was a hatchling dinosaur, apprentices had to have five things: pencil, note pad, tape measure, Channel-Locks, and a knife. That's what you were supposed to have, and you'd ΔŸΗ’Γ°ΔΓ¦mΕ† well better have them on you. No one ever whimpered about carrying a knife; those who didn't want to do the job could easily be replaced.

Years ago I made a paring knife from scratch for my then spouse. I make okay-ish kitchen knives but this one I put some extra effort into. Really pretty ebony and ziricote handles with some of those fancy pins. It was a borderline instagram worthy knife.

I can't quite remember but I think she put the knife thru the dishwasher the first time. It came apart from the heat defeating the epoxy. But I was able to glue it back together and redo the finish etc. Close to good as new. Then some babysitter ran it thru the dishwasher a 2nd time and I gave up lol. The pieces are sitting around somewhere still I'm sure.

Nah, not really ... but I still remember her sitting there biting the end of that bag and desperately shaking her head side-to-side! I had to laugh to myself. πŸ˜„

Jim and Doc, I've mentioned this before but I once chatted with a very anti gun anti knife person who goes further than most. This one said other than kitchen knives there should be no sporting or tactical knives and only pocket knives with blades that do not lock and no longer than 2 inches blade length.
The person even opposed military and police having firearms and said they should only use stun guns amd martial arts to subdue criminals and fight war.

Total insanity.

It is surprising to me just how many folks don't carry and/or use knives. It seems like it might even be the majority of folks.

I use my knife/knives every day.

I’ve been curious about why people are so opposed to a knife in public. Even a small Swiss Army knife makes some people squeamish.
