GITD LC200N and Maganacut?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Is it time to bring back the glow in the dark FRN, but this time on the LC200N and Magnacut lines? I've been playing with my GITD Delica the last couple of days (a blacklight will really make it glow!) and was thinking how great this would be on a Salt knife.

In my view, yes, it's absolutely time to bring it back on the LC200N and MagnaCut lines. The GITD FRN has proven appeal from past releases, and with Spyderco's focus on innovation, it could differentiate these premium steels in a crowded market. For the Salt series specifically, it would enhance safety and utility in wet, dark conditions without adding weight or cost significantly. If you're part of Spyderco forums or their feedback channels, suggesting this could help— they've responded to community ideas before with exclusives. In the meantime, if your GITD Delica is VG-10 based, upgrading to an LC200N Salt (even in standard yellow) might scratch that itch, but a GITD version would be next-level.

They do glow nicely and for a long time. I think this would be a good idea for a salt knife. They could be seen at depths where colors disappear. Of course, some fish are attracted to GITD.

Anything that brings more Seki GITD, I'm all for. If it's in a Salt configuration, even better for my personal tastes!

As a 90s kid I'm all for more glow in the dark everything. A GITD Pacific Salt SE in lc200n would shoot to the top of my must have list.

I do in no way mean this in an insulting way Dan, but your comment just reminded me about the ridiculous trend to have excessive water depth ratings and helium escape valves on thousands of dollars commercial/fashion watches that hardly even see a swimming pool.
Nonetheless I very much agree that we need GITD Salt knives, though I mostly have above sea level utility in mind :)

Anyone who has ever dropped his knife at night would know how practical this would be. Many night fishers use GITD floats or lines so they can be seen.
Another good thing about FRN is that it can be dyed and still be GITD. I've seen purple that glows blue, orange, yellow, green, you get the idea. Another cool thing is a handheld blacklight (UV) swept back and forth will make a GITD glow brightly when it wasn't, before. Much easier all the way around to find.

Any divers out there want to confirm if this would make a difference under water? We've all seen the pictures of the colored markers under water and how colors can change at different depths. I would imagine at "full glow" it might help but without any charge would the base color still be visible enough under water?

Of course I'm not worried about that, I don't go diving but it's an interesting question.

Hmmmmm… maybe a Spyderco branded UV light for making it glow and finding scorpions, dog pee and bad hotel cleaning.

How long does the GITD last ... and I don't mean how long the glow lasts. But is the GITD feature permanent on the scales, or does it eventually wear off / fade over time and use, or from overexposure to direct sunlight?

It isn't "on" the scales. It is infused. Mine still glows just as brightly as it did when knew all those years ago.

Oh yeah, I agree it's very useful. It was just the reference to being visible at depths where other colors disappear. That's probably true, but probably not why most of us want GITD. The number of Salt owners who take their knives to such depths are not unlikely to be proportional to those who take their Submariner or Planet ocean watches on saturation dives.

So I absolutely want one, just for a bit more mondain task than diving beyond the visibility window of the regular salts :smlling-eyes

I agree that it is kind of silly to want a watch capable of 500 meters when a person never gets in a boat in the ocean, much less dives. But, they look good and cool.

GITD looks cool, too. But, I used to fish and hunt (a lot!) from FL to AK and GITD would have been handy a few times. Skinning out that deer, and it's getting dark, and you drop your knife from your gooey hands. GITD would make it easy to find. But, I have to admit. I love playing with my GITD Delica. It's just fun. Back when I was a kid we had GITD Creepy Crawlers and similar things, skulls, skeletons, spiders, and more. Plus, we had models of monsters that were GITD. Fun stuff.

I agree. I love my GITD Delicas, Dragonflys, Jesters, and Ladybugs. A GITD LC200N/H2 Salt 1 and GITD LC200N/H2 Dragonfly would be on my must have list! Would probably buy multiples honestly.

GITD H2 SE Dodofly Salt?? ;)
