These got announced in Reveal 16 back in November, and as far as I can tell every single knife from that reveal has been released except for both of the CruCarta Natives. Did they run into an issue and get delayed, or cancelled altogether?

According to info posted on here re: Erasteel, CruWear one of the Crucible steels that is being discontinued.

I am not privy to Spyderco's inventory level on discontinued steels, however.

In summary, who knows at this point ?

They know it is an extremely anticipated model, but when I asked about it at the SFO they told me that they were having problems with the liners. Since switching to a linerless design, I believe they were having some trouble with the strength or rigidity of the micarta handles themselves without any steel liners backing them.


I wonder if perhaps that wasn’t anticipated and maybe they are trying to either find a way to do that knife with steel liners, or somehow strengthen up the micarta handles on their own.


Only Sal could likely give us the straight dope.

I really hope they don’t cancel these. CruWear is my favorite and I’ve been waiting for this one. Can’t they do these with steel liners?

If they can't get the linerless micarta to work, sell the knives to DLT as their purple G10 exclusive and to Knife Center as their smooth G10 exclusive. We already know linerless G10 is strong enough.

Good call. I'd recommend the peel-ply CF/G10 laminate to differentiate these knives from the S90V sprint runs.

Just replace Cruwear in the CruCarta line with Magnamax and we'll have the (drum roll) MagnaCarta ... win-win

tbh, I was pretty surprised they were going to do these as unlined micarta in the first place.
Hasn't Sal previously said something like
"We learned a lot from making those unlined Micarta knives. Mostly we learned not to"

Hi @raygixxer89 . Spyderco's current production Natives are linerless. In this case, I think adding liners will require additional tooling, delay production, and drive the price up.

The linerless knives I have are the Spyderco Native Chief and Native 5, and Cold Steel American Lawman. Those knives are plenty strong. They don't have any liners to rust or collect pocket crud. They are much, much easier to disassemble than any member of the Endura or Stretch families. So while there are many great knives with liners, I've come to appreciate those without.

besides, what can a linered folding knife do that a linerless one can't?

I can understand preferring the more rigid feeling handle or if you enjoy the weight, but when it comes down to it there's nothing a lined Native can do a linerless cannot.

While I agree with the principle, the linerless Natives have no PB washers, and I think it seriously harms their action. I haven't bought a linerless Native Chief because AWT doesn't have replacement scale + PB washer kits for them like they do the Native 5.

I can't wait for the Crucarta Native Chief. I hope Spyderco has enough Cruwear already on order or already in back stock that this won't be a problem.

chiefs come with washers though? the stock scales are nice too after a little contouring.

You're thinking of the LW, which has molded washers. The linerless G10 (and CF) Native 5 have PB washers.

Yea, I was only thinking of the LW models; I spaced the fact that the G10 models are also linerless. To be honest with the G10 models I don't think you can even tell they are linerless, they feel more rigid than a lot of the Seki City FRN models that have liners.
