Anyone else have a sage 5 where the tip is barely in the scales?
Anyone else have a sage 5 where the tip is barely in the scales?
I got this Sage 5 salt about 2 months ago or so and have rit dyed it, and I also did some grinding to make a sharpening choil. The issue is the tip just BARELY goes into the scales when it’s closed. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal or is this a manufacturing issue?

There's a thread about this same issue on SPY27 Shamans. I've not heard of this being a known issue on the Sage 5.Krondor12 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 11:14 pmI got this Sage 5 salt about 2 months ago or so and have rit dyed it, and I also did some grinding to make a sharpening choil. But if, when closed, you can lightly run your finger over the gap between the handles and the blade tip snags your skin, that is a safety issue. I would email the warranty department at Spyderco and follow their guidance. They'll probably have you mail it to the factory for inspection and warranty repair or replacement.

That’s called a proud tip and it’s not normal. Unfortunately your warranty is voided. Was it always like this or did it appear after the mods

I agree, unfortunately I think you likely voided your warranty with your mods. Maybe you can sacrifice a couple mm blade length and grind the tip down a little.
Re: Anyone else have a sage 5 where the tip is barely in the scales?
The tip coverage on the Sage 5 is adequate, but not fantastic even when new.
I have an old Sage1 which has been used and sharpened a lot.
The tip goes into the handle a smidge further on my old Sage 1 than on new Sage 5 lightweights.
If you took it apart to dye the scales, maybe it didn't go back together quite right? Maybe try taking in apart and reassembling it again?
Has it been sharpened?
Can you provide better pictures?

There was a recent reddit thread about this with the Sage. Brand new one with no mods and same issue.
Sal indicated in the SPY27 Shaman thread here on the forums that the issue had been identified and resolved with the Shamans. Believe he said they pulled the affected inventory, so there shouldn't be anymore in the wild. However, I've still seen people reporting it, and now it seems to not be isolated to the Shaman.

Send it to SFO if concerned.Krondor12 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 11:14 pmI got this Sage 5 salt about 2 months ago or so and have rit dyed it, and I also did some grinding to make a sharpening choil.
