Delica Salt?

#1

Post by FrankSD »

Hey All~

Fairly new to Spyderco knives. I visited my sons in New Mexico in January, and since I didn't check a bag I was without a pocketknife or multitool of my own during my stay. One of my sons loaned me a Delica 4 (C11PGRE, British Racing Green, ZDP-189) which I really liked. At the end of the trip, I offered to buy the knife from him, but he just told me to keep it. That was my entry into the Delica rabbit hole...

So, I was thinking a couple days ago about a Delica Salt...and someone pointed me to the Salt 2 (C88SYL2 or C88SWCYL2). Cosmetically it looks like a Delica - is that what it is, just with a different name and H-1 steel? Would this add to my Delica collection, or is it really not considered a Delica.

Thanks!

If only the answer were simple! 🙂
The Salt 2 is the closest thing to a Delica Salt. The blade shape is slightly different and the handles are linerless. Does it count as a Delica? It depends on how you want to count it. Some people say yes, some say no. Count it if you want to!

It is also available in LC200n. I think both steels are fantastic.

There are also a few exclusive Delica models that are occasionally available in M390 (Bento Box Shop) or 20CV (DLT, Knifejoy). There are probably some others also. Those are quite stainless and are closer to ZDP in terms of edge retention if you’re wanting that, although they are not full salts. Welcome and have fun with this!

i would consider it a delica salt. the salt 2 has the same handle shape as the delica and the blade is almost the same, each with slightly more bulk and different grinds. they are basically the same knife in hand though.

don't overthink it. if you love the delica, you will love a spyderedge salt 2.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

The Salt 2 is close to a Delica, but there are differences:

- Obviously no liners and thus lighter
- A bit thicker handle
- Longer blade (I think about 2 or 3 mm )
- Larger opening hole, thus a bit taller blade and steeper thumb ramp (that pushes the hand slightly further back on the handle if one uses the ramp)
- More sheepsfooty, less acute, but more robust tip.
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Added to my post above:

- There is a true sabre grind Delica, but the H2 Salt 2 comes in hollow
(sabre) grind, which I personally prefer by a lot.

(The LC200N Salt 2 comes in ffg, just like most Delicas do these days)

I would absolutely consider the Salt 2 to be a "Delica Salt". It's definitely in the Delica family, since it shares the same handle shape.

Very true

Though I may say that in use I do notice and slightly prefer the feel in hand of the a bit thicker Salt 2 handle (but on the flipside slightly the more handle heavy balance of the Delica)

I consider it a Delica variation. There are quite a few Spyderco knives that use the Delica handle.

Thanks all! I put the order through for the [Delica] Salt 2 with a Wharncliffe Spyderedge. Looking forward to having it in hand and adding it to my modest Delica collection!

I greatly appreciate the input.
