Chaparral LW Salt SE

A quick show of hands - who wants one? (I have both my hands up).

As a Taichung knife I sincerely hope we get one with full Salt grade liners in the same vein as the Caribbean. Same ultra robust feel in hand, same laser beam cutting geometry, same lovely wavy serrations, just Saltified.

I've gone on record before and said that any knife I'd be interested in owning, I would also be interested in a Salt version, so yes.

I’ll be fine with Sage 5 SE salt. But even better, bring back SE Caribbeans please!

TBH, I'm perfectly happy with the Chap SE as it is. I love my linerless Salts, but the Chap's linered construction doesn't really scream "Salt" to me.

I wonder how they'd handle the internal stop pin? That rides along the liners, I wonder if FRN could support it the same way?

Good point. I was just assuming stainless (more stainless) liners and stop pin. It might not be that simple.

For me a Chap is only a Chap WITH liners which make that super thin FRN handle but still sturdy feel and construction possible in the first place...

So I think a Chap Salt should be constructed just like the current FRN Chap, but of course with rustproof liners and hardwear (like Caribbean or PM2 Salt).
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Of course! :clinking-mugs

Imo the Chap FRN SE is the best knife Spyderco makes (other than its small size), and a Salt version would certainly help to get it in the hands of more people and make it more popular.

This was what I was thinking too Gernot. A Chap without liners (if such a thing was possible) would be so light it would feel totally different. I think I would find it off-putting as the liners’ heft and rigidity make it feel way more premium than my liner-less knives, very much a part of its charm.

I’m not surprised it wouldn’t be your jam @vivi, as I would imagine for your hand size the handle is too diminutive for a comfortable grip (not to mention your preference for maximum blade length)? I wonder if we’ll ever see blade stock and BTE thickness as thin as the Chap SE along with the stop pin design in an upscaled knife more fit for the larger handed person.

I suppose a bit of sand getting into the ‘stop pin track’(?) would jam it open, but that’s the case with sand and folding knives of most designs - I’ve had my lock get jammed open on my D’fly Salt SE and N5 Salt SE any number of times while playing with my kids at the beach. A quick sluice through in the sea rectifies it without any drama, but I wonder if the design of the track the pin rides in might cause an issue? Maybe just leave a cutout in the exterior of the scales so it can be easily accessed and flushed?

Bwahahaha! 😂 That tickled me!

I’d forgotten all about the Catcherman! I snagged one ages ago but had to have it posted to a relative in the UK and I’ve not been back there in three years. Due a trip this summer and am now looking forward to getting the knife all over again (now you’ve reminded me I’ve got one! 😂😵‍💫).

The Chaparral SE is the proverbial 'Spyderco Forum knife', but I wonder what the sales are like.

I'm guessing that the Spyderco team has to balance the wants of the enthusiasts w/ the likes of the general public.

I, myself, would like to pick one up indeed, but I'm also being served quite well on the SE front by the LJ K390 SE.
