Sharpening Services

#1

Post by M_J87 »

Hello Spyderco Forums,

First off I want to thank Sal and everyone working for and with Spyderco, as well as all the users on the forum. I'm a long time browser and most topics have kept me engaged in the hobby, and recently I feel I have a few things to contribute as I've been a collector/user for about 5 years now.

I'm curious about everyone's experience with Spyderco's sharpening services. To be more specific, I have a Stretch 2 XL in VG-10 I've had in my pocket nearly every day for about 2 years now (love the knife so much I've gotten rid of all but a few knives), and with the recent debates about angles and edge retention, I decided to bring the angle down to about 12 DPS using a guided system, and micro beveling at 15 degrees with the brown rods on the sharpmaker. I've been thoroughly impressed with the results, but in part of learning how to sharpen, my main bevel has a few different angles ranging from 11-13 degrees due to learning curve as well as limitations on said guided system.

It doesn't effect the edge functionally as I still have the 15 degree micro bevel, "just" a cosmetic thing, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with sending their knives to the factory with a lower angle, and if Spyderco tries to match the lowest angle, or if they typically bring the whole edge back up to 15-20 degrees? I want to retain as much steel as possible as it's already about 1/16th of an inch shorter than when I got it, and would prefer them not to bring the entire edge back up to 20 DPS, thereby reducing the edge life even more. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks! :bug-red-white :usflag

Hi, M_J87:
Welcome to the Spyderco forum. My best recommendation would be to contact our Warranty & Repair Department and explain everything to them. You can reach them via email at customerservice@spyderco.com. Our crew will do their best to assist you.

We hope you enjoy your time with us.

In my experience, Spyderco does not try to match thinner aftermarket edges.

I sent in a Police 4 lightweight that I had sharpened to about 10 degrees per side. I sent it in for an issue unrelated to the blade. I taped over the blade and wrote in sharpie on the tape "DO NOT SHARPEN."

It came back to me with a factory edge of around 17-20 degrees per side.

I was so annoyed I sold it off for half what I payed for it, because I didn't want to reprofile the same knife twice.

Still need to pick up a replacement police 4.....

Hey Vivi,

When did this happen? Are you sure it was the same knife?

Hi Vivi,

I spoke with Charlynn about your knife. She said her notes were not complete but she thought that we were training new people at the time and they may have inadvertently re-sharpened your knife. for which I apologize.

Hey M_J,

Welcome to our forum and thanx for your interest and support across the years. As Charlynn said in her email, she can't guarantee that we can perfectly match your re-profile. I would suggest that you use your original guided system to sort out the edge grind.

Vivi,
Get you one of the sprint run Police4 's, the Micro Melt PD #1 is really been some great steel with every one I have gotten. I have done close to 12 now and still counting lol...

I am not a big fan of the color of the scales, so I have either dyed them black or got some aftermarket one from Dimitri in Ukraine his has all fit perfect and finished right down to the edges.

If you had the sprint run you had re-profiled, taking the PD #1 steel to 10 dps is something I have wanted to do for a while now, but have not because of how much time and diamond stones it will take. My hat is off to you sir.

I too sent in a knife a month or two ago now and I told them to only fix the stripped clip screws, as it came that way. I had already honed mine and it had one bevel on one side way off from the other.

Took me quite some time to get it honed out and even on both side, all before I realized the clip was never going to stay hucked to the scales.

Mine was fixed and back to me within a week, and they never touched the edge on mine, I was so happy with it.

My first time to ever send a knife in for warranty work too. I usually fix the stuff myself, but this time i just thought why not try the factory...

So don't lose the faith man, you just had somebody goofed lol. But I can only imagine how much time it took you to profile that to 10 dps...

Your PD1 Police with green scales made me want to build one similar, but I had trouble finding the pd1 police in stock. I'm a big fan of blacked out knives with green scales and the police is a favorite of mine, so I noticed yours as soon as you started posting pictures of it.

Couldn't PM you, so I'll be posting here. Dunno if this dealer is legit but it seems they have one in stock.

Nationalknives.com is where to get your sprint run. They are awesome to deal with. They box your knife wrapped in a microfiber towel that keeps even your boxes safe.

I have this disease that really keeps me focused on things that are not that important to others lol. I get really torqued up when the box to my pocket knife, or anything else for that matter; comes in all mashed up.

The scales you mentioned are really nice and fit perfect. I get them off etsy from dhcustomknives. The guys name is Dimitri and he is in Ukraine, he has been awesome to deal with, he stays in touch with you and let's you know when he ships.

Still will have to go through all the protocol and hits US customs in NY city but you get your tracking info on them. It has been simple and easy enough considering Dimitri lives in a war torn country.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Will see if I can try and figure something out in regard to the edge. Interested to see how the new police turns out, vivi. I'm a fan of larger knives, and I've been interested in the police but never pulled the trigger. Handle is a bit bigger than I care for, and I tend to like knives under 3.5 oz. Maybe someday.

It's all good Sal. That you'd go to such lengths to see what happened speaks volumes about you. I'm sorry my first post in this thread came off so whiny.

I have a PD1 sprint on the way. It'll be nice to get another Lightweight Police in my rotation. It's one of my favorite designs you've done. Been a big fan of the Police for years, and the slightly thicker FRN handle feels nice in the hand.

This is the first time I've actually seen a custom G10 maker for the P4, it looks awesome especially the knurled texture - but I'm even more surprised by the price... cheaper than US makers especially for a big handle! Do they fit the LW P4?

He is the only one I have ever found that makes the scales that fit the Police4. There may be others, but I never found anyone lol. Far as fit the lw version, I don't know anything about those, I have only used them on the Police4 's, sorry can't help with that.

I installed four sets of these scales this afternoon, red, black, green and a white. If you have not seen the pix I shot of all this, it's in the picture gallery under my name.
These scales really fit great and feel good in your hand.

Good looking scales, should give you a great grip. Slightly reminds me of the GP Knives brick scales on their PM2.

It hurt when I made a little native with a katana sharp angle, then because my Order form wasn’t specific, it got brought back to factory edge… also sacrificed some of the DLC to get it that sharp, so now it looks like I was just careless 🥲

Spyderco does not mirror polish edges so unless you need a reprofile, don’t do it
