First off I want to thank Sal and everyone working for and with Spyderco, as well as all the users on the forum. I'm a long time browser and most topics have kept me engaged in the hobby, and recently I feel I have a few things to contribute as I've been a collector/user for about 5 years now.
I'm curious about everyone's experience with Spyderco's sharpening services. To be more specific, I have a Stretch 2 XL in VG-10 I've had in my pocket nearly every day for about 2 years now (love the knife so much I've gotten rid of all but a few knives), and with the recent debates about angles and edge retention, I decided to bring the angle down to about 12 DPS using a guided system, and micro beveling at 15 degrees with the brown rods on the sharpmaker. I've been thoroughly impressed with the results, but in part of learning how to sharpen, my main bevel has a few different angles ranging from 11-13 degrees due to learning curve as well as limitations on said guided system.
It doesn't effect the edge functionally as I still have the 15 degree micro bevel, "just" a cosmetic thing, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with sending their knives to the factory with a lower angle, and if Spyderco tries to match the lowest angle, or if they typically bring the whole edge back up to 15-20 degrees? I want to retain as much steel as possible as it's already about 1/16th of an inch shorter than when I got it, and would prefer them not to bring the entire edge back up to 20 DPS, thereby reducing the edge life even more. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!
