serrated SPY27 folders maybe?

#1

Post by cjk »

Given that SPY27 is steadily making its way through the Golden product line, I'm wondering what the chances are that we see SPY27 with teeth? It might be great? I'm happy with serrated S30V, S35VN, H1, and Magnacut. I'd love to try SPY27 out.

If we get down to voting on a model, my personal favorite serrated USA Spyderco is the compression lock lil' Native. I have several of these in S30v. One lives in my fifth pocket.

Second place would the G-10 Native 5, third would be the Native 5 lightweight.

I'd be over the moon with any of those.

The Native 5 lightweight might make the most sense.

Would an AFI sprint only sold by SFO be something that could happen?

If such a project were successful enough, I'd love to see more steels with teeth.

Great idea! No secret that I prefer a good Spyderedge over PE in any Spyderco folder.

But to me personally it is also CRYSTAL CLEAR which Spy 27 Golden model should get teeth first and in any case:

The Manix 2 (if you ask me, the LW version)!!

Still no ffg fully serrated Manix at all, not even the "Salt"... (while many other models (lately the Bodacious, but also Stretch XL, Chief)... got an SE version right from the start) (see also here viewtopic.php?p=1748541#p1748541)

While I´d take pretty much any Manix version if it had teeth, a Spy27 LW sounds like one of the best options for that to me (from all I know about that steel, have not tried it myself yet).
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

I'm kinda surprised they haven't happened yet, like suspiciously surprised. I was really excited about it when Spy27 was revealed but then it seemed like MagnaCut was announced right after and it stole the spotlight.

I'm in to play with pretty much any steel in SE that has never been given the SE treatment. I'm particularly curious about 15V.

Off topic, but, well, the Chap SE brings teeth in XHP... :smirk ... probably a first? (Not entirely sure though)

Yeah I eventually want to try all of the exotic blade steels on Spyderco knives with TEETH.

Just like with plain edges there are profound differences in blade steels in serrated blades as well.

My recent acquisition of a Cruwear TEMPERANCE model in SE was truly a most pleasant surprise.

I agree with Warstein.
We need serrations on a manix

Since VG-10 works so well in SE, and Spy27 is essentially a PM version of VG-10, it stands to reason that this steel should do very well in SE. I could be mistaken. I wonder if prototypes of SE blades in Spy27 have been tested in-house?

I'd like some myself. I'll check the mfg queue as see what might be planned.

Hope you´ll let us know, Sal!

And even if I almost gave up hope already to ever see this model in ffg SE: Also that there finally might be a Manix with teeth... Spy 27 could be a perfect choice for that (Spydercos steel in the edge type (SE) which Spyderco made popular (or you even "invented" for knives??) and does so well compared to other companies...)

This is encouraging news. One thing I’ve always loved about VG-10 is how it “wants” to get sharp. I imagine SPY27 will be similar.

I’m a go big or go home kinda guy, so I can’t help but wonder if the magnificent Manix 2 XL might be the perfect platform for some SE Spy27?

Also while we’re on the subject…SE Crucarta would be pretty magical. I’d have to go full Pokémon (gotta catch em all!).

VG-10 is one of the few blade steels that I've discovered that works just as well in SE as it does in PE. AUS-8 is another blade steel I could give that distinction to.

I'm just about to conclude that Cruwear might also have earned that grade as well. But I want to use my SE TEMPERANCE model a few times more to come to that conclusion.

VG-10 is especially a good performer with Hawkbill blades.

But I do want to try an SE folder in SPY27 just to see if it performs well.

All jokes aside I'm in for any Manix SE Spy27, and after getting the Temp sprint I've been really wondering why the CruCarta and PD#1 sprint didn't get any Spyderedge love since pretty much all the models already have standard variants in SE.

The most correct answer to this thread though is to do a run of the Caribbean SE in Spy27. We must resurrect Spyderco's best SE knife.

I think the right answer is to get a current model where the SPY27 material is inventoried. So an already existing Golden made model that has a SPY27 model in production would probably make the most sense.

Seems like only right that eventually a SPY27 serrated model will pop up. SPY27 not only for its sharpening attributes, but a Spyderco exclusive steel to combo with Spyderco Serrations seems like a no brainer. I am sure Sal and team have brought it up.

Spyderco says that "CPM SPY27’s ability to get 'sticky sharp' is magnified when used in long blades, like that of the Native Chief," so that's my guess as a potential starting point. Maybe a Chief LW SE to test the waters?

What would everyone else like to see in SPY27 Serrated? I know the Manix would be popular since it does not have a serrated version in production. Personally, I would like to see the Native 5 G10 come out first with serrations.
