Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
I just purchased a Spyderco in Rex 121. I was wondering if anyone knew POSITIVELY what Spyderco uses on the blade to protect it before shipping, since Rex 121 is well known for low corrosion resistance. Please, NO SUGGESTIONS, just EXACTLY what Spyderco uses.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Welcome to our forum. Knives with tool steel (like REX 121) have a desiccant pack included in the box.
We hope you enjoy your time with us.

There is nothing more important than this one day.
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
Thanks Kristi (and thanks for the welcome!). I'm aware of that. But what I was asking is what lubricant or protectant they apply to the blades to prevent rust before shipping them from the factory. (I would like to begin using the same lubricant/protectant.)
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
I would think any product they are likely to use would be evident when the knife was taken out of the box and I've never noticed anything like that.
Some products you can spray on then wipe off but that would take a lot of time during the packing of each knife and there would likely still be some evidence of it.
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
I have had at least one spyderco tool steel knife come new with some type of lube. Noticeably in pivot area/base of blade. I think it may have been the Rex 121 (or the Hap40 satin mainix?). Both were purchased during similar timeframe. Somebody tell me I am not crazy?
Edit: is it possible dealer may have done prior to shipping?

I just unboxed a Rex 121 Lightweight Sage 5. I definitely wiped off some type of oil/lubricant from the blade. A desiccant packet was in the plastic with the knife as well.JBoone wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2024 8:58 pmI have had at least one spyderco tool steel knife come new with some type of lube. It doesn't matter what Spyderco applies to the blade before shipping. What really matters is how you protect and care for the blade the moment you receive the knife. I personally use Ballistol on all my knives. In fact, I just applied some to my Rex 121 right now.
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
Thanks to all for the replies.
ZHYLA, and others that are uncertain if Spyderco applies something on the blades before shipping, the answer is ABSOLUTELY. I know because I have 17 Spydercos purchased from various vendors and each has come with some light oil or other substance on the blade. I generally wipe it off and apply Ballistol, which over the years (40+) that I have been collecting knives, I've found works the best to prevent blade rust.
I was simply trying to find out what Spyderco uses, and if they use anything "special" on Rex 121.
Thanks again.

Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
I'm curious if it's applied by the factory or by Spyderco
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
I wax mine with Renaissance wax, as I do most of my blades except for DLC. Never a problem with rust. Rex 121 does not seem to want to rust much anyway, not like Maxamet or k390.

Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection

I've bought more than my share of Spyderco knives and I know that most, if not all, have some kind of protectant on the blade. Whether or not Spyderco will divulge what they use is the question
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
Definitely some sort of thiiick oil as mine arrived yesterday and I had to wipe a glob of it off. Was different than whatever they add on the seki factory though. That blade was soaked.
The stainless blades I received also had a thinner coat of oil on them but enough that I could see fibers sticking to the blade.
Re: Spyderco's Rex 121 factory blade protection
I just going a Spyderco (Taiwan) and it had a thin coat of oil.

This topic has come up in the past and seems to be a trade secret based on threads I’ve read. This is supported by Kristi’s response about desiccant and not the actual coating agent.
It may be in Spyderco’s interest not to divulge the exact coating agent to help with counterfeit detection (blades coated with something other than what their factories use). Have wondered the same thing though…
