Sausages and Cold Cuts

What do you all think of sausages and cold cut type meats? Some say they are unhealthy because of fat and salt but others say they are good and very traditional. I love them but I won't eat blood sausage. Bratwurst and hot dogs are so yummy. You can make so many recipes with them. I have had bologna tacos where I layer refried beans with slices of bologna and cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, salsa, guacamole.

Love ‘em!

I do try and consume in moderation, though. Salt, nitrites etc aren’t good for you.

I think “nose to tail” eating is respectful to the animal, and sausages, offal etc are part of that. Having said that, I’ve never knowingly eaten head cheese.

Is it true you can’t buy haggis in the US?

I love most things you find on a charcuterie plate, or more specific dry aged meat. Capocollo, Salami, bresaola, mortadella, prosciutto. If it is dry aged ham or sausage i'm in! Same with everything, moderate your intake and go with quality produce!

I can get Johnsonville over here, but that's it. I can't get a good hot dog, at all. No bologna, either.

You may want to do some actual research about why “some people” are concerned about the safety of eating these processed meats.

A friend of mine who tries to eat only organic grassfed meats refuses to eat sausages, hot dogs, or any cold cut meats because he claims even the best are made from ground up waste products from the animals. I said in response that people have been eating sausages for centuries. But the recent increases in food recalls because of bacteria are scary. What is your wise advice on this issue? Is it like some have said: if the starting ingredients are good and eaten in moderation it will be safe? My friend only eats solid unground meat.

Unhealthy, yeah probably but I love hotdogs and hot mets and I don't give a crap what animal byproducts are in them.

One of my favorite things is a plain bologna sandwich. I can actually eat just bologna on bread with nothing else on it at all and be totally fine with it.

Also really love Vienna sausages with saltine crackers.

Fried Spam is actually delicious. Goes great with breakfast. Also a fried bologna omelette is really good.

I really want to try a whole smoked bologna. I just got a smoker so this is going to happen sooner than later.

Interesting subject you bring up SEF :cheap-sunglasses Close to where I live is a German run meat market in Warrensburg, Missouri known as Alewel's Country Meats. They have thee best Buffalo Summer Sausage you ever ate. And they do mail orders here in the USA. In the past they have also done summer sausage with Ostrich, Emu, Elk and other types of exotic meats.

I also love to snack on really good grades of authentic salami. I just got a package of Appleton Farms, Black Pepper Salami the other day. I love to combine it with a good grade of aged swiss cheese to snack on while watching NFL games or videos that I find intriguing.

JD my friend those sausages and cheeses sound delicious! I love the combination on good crackers like Ritz and others. Some people slice fruit and dates as an added topping.

My go to late night snack is a large piece of deli sliced Fiorucci pepperoni together with a slice of Red Apple brand smoked cheddar cheese, okay maybe two!

Wow you all know good food. I am so glad. MK yes Hebrew National are the best. One of my favorites is to grill those until hot and juicy and mix with mashed potato and add ketchup.

I eat fast food like taco bell, mcdonalds, burger king, etc., once per year max most years. We order our fries with no salt so that they do not have salt and are fresh and hot. I may go to Portillos here in the Chicagoland area and get a small beef sandwich for myself twice a year.

We do not really eat hamburgers, hot dogs or have meat toppings on our pizza. I might order a peperoni pizza, but she takes off the peperoni. My mom eats meat and fish rarely. I eat salmon and tuna from cans for now. I used to bake it or fry it on the stove top, but nothing recently.

Our "fast food" is fresh, uncooked pizza, and we typically order 4 small cheese pizzas uncooked then store them in the refrigerator to eat over the next 4 days.

My brother came out to visit our mother the other day and he brought some fast food. He brought hot dogs and I don't think I've had a hot dog within the last 5 years. I ate it. It was OK.

We do eat lunch meat at least twice per year. We order 6 inch Jersey Mikes subs. But that's it. Not really into any fast food or junk food, but we do eat pizzas. I gave up on most red meat and things like bratwurst.

We try to avoid most of the foods that you mentioned. Hasn't helped me lose weight though, I still eat.

Zeigler's Balogna for the win!

I love mine fried, but plain is also a favorite.
