With all the chatter about disc golf here on the forum recently, it was time for a dedicated thread to discuss all things disc golf.

I’ll get things started with a disc I dyed early this year.

The mold is an MVP Glitch. Should be a fun catch disc to toss around before the seconds sale this year.

Someone was asking for tips.

Here's a video I made explaining off axis torque. It's the reason a lot of folks turn over discs 200-300' out that pros can throw 400'+ without turning over.

I've been making disc golf videos since the standard definition days. I've got disc tests, course walk throughs, instructionals etc. Others have definitely surpassed me when it comes to video quality and so forth, but maybe you'll find something that'll help you out.

Following! I got started playing Ultimate Frisbee in college with a large group of friends. That is still probably my favorite sport to play.

I've mostly had Innovas, but tried some other brands last year.
Of the Innovas this Starfire has been my most used over the years for distance.


Some new ones i got over a year ago to try out other brands.
I really like the Deputy for long putts.
I end up using the Bounty often in some of the thick woods courses we have around where I live.


I also prefer the feel of the soft plastics. Even though with all the trees they tend to get eaten up more.

No cart girls on these disc courses, so don't forget to bring a drink.


When I get some more time, I'll sit down and watch your videos Vivi.

Ooo. I gotta try that. Friend purchased this right after his disc landed on top of a mushroom and appeared to be floating in the air as we approached it. Thought you would enjoy.

I primarily use an MVP Nomad for anything under 275' if it's more than that I depend on a Valkyrie, Gorgon or a Corvette. I prefer the softer Halo/star plastics as well.
Where things go sideways for me is putts outside 15-20 feet, I suppose more practice will help. My technique is pathetic, it's like I have a glitch Probably 20+ years of baseball and softball scaring on my chicken wing.

When it comes to putting, just like so many other athletic activities, the power comes from the ground up. Lots of people try to throw it in, but the power for a long range putt comes from correctly timing a push off your rear leg and transferring that power to your arm movement. Much like a boxer throwing a power jab.

Having a routine also helps. Doing the same movements every time. Like watching John Stockton shooting free throws in the 90's. He had a routine he did every shot.

Don't get too in your head, but don't fail to properly setup. Some folks take a full minute and ten practice pumps to putt, and that's a bit much I think. But, you want to make sure your feet are properly planted, you're not stepping on branches etc. you could move out of your way, and you want to get a read on the wind.

Speaking of wind, understanding how it affects disc flight is essential, especially in certain parts of the world.

Headwinds make discs act like they're flying faster than normal. It makes them more likely to flip over, and it can also lift discs upwards. Especially if you throw with the nose up (most people that aren't pros do).

Tilting your wrist down a bit like you're giving someone a hand shake, and making sure your weight is shifting on to your front leg so you're not leaning back, are two of the best ways to achieve a nose down disc release.

Tail winds do the opposite. They make discs act like they're flying slower than they are. Your flippy discs will fly straight in a tail wind, so rip them with confidence. Putts will drop out of the air sooner, so kick off the rear leg with more gusto or aim a bit higher.

When dealing with left to right and right to left crosswinds, the basic rule of thumb is to not show the underside of the disc to the wind. I'm not going to cover every possible type of wind or throw, but lets work with one example.

Say you're throwing a perfectly straight, wide open 350' hole. You have a wind coming from your right to your left. Normally you throw a right handed back hand hyzer shot here, which would be a bad idea as the wind would take your rhbh hyzer and carry it off to the left. So to manage the wind conditions, two better ideas would be opting for a backhand anhyzer with a less overstable disc, or throwing a right hand forehand hyzer. Both of those, if properly executed, will keep the disc flying more true.

LOL! Landing on top of a mushroom like that would be better than an ace in my mind!

That’s a really cool looking disc too. I would probably be reluctant to throw it!

I also tend to prefer softer plastic, so I usually lean towards their star plastic as well. I bought a halo star Valkyrie earlier this year that really like throwing. The halo star plastic makes it a bit more over stable than the flight numbers suggest but that’s one of the big reasons why I like it so much.




I haven’t tried throwing a Gorgon yet but it’s definitely on my list to try. I like the Roadrunner and rim beads, so the Gorgon has a lot going for it that makes me think I’d like it as well.

Just wanted to share a few shots from the 2024 MVP Open at Maple Hill Disc Golf course in Leicester, Mass last weekend.

Was only able to attend the first round on Thursday but it was still a blast. Watching the pros throw is a sight to see, they make it look so easy, it’s very impressive.

Some of my buddies were up there too. Wysocki grew up near where we all got our start (NE Ohio) so they got to hang out with him.

Haven't been to Maple Hill but its definitely on my wish list.

Playing a short course today where with a full bag I'd only throw a driver on one hole.

Testing out a pair of tempos and my first total eclipse hex.

@vivi That's awesome, Ricky seems like a really cool guy. It would be fun to hang out with a pro player. Playing a round with a pro would be a ton of fun too. Humbling I'm sure but I know I'd still enjoy it.

Also, nice discs. I bought one of those OTB Open Tempo's earlier this year as well. It was my first experience with the mold in general but I ended up liking it a lot. Good straight flyer with a reliable fade. I bought one of those MVP Open Glow Tempo's at the event this year as well. Haven't thrown it yet but even if it's more over-stable I think I'll still like it.

I've chained out 3 times from the tee, had only done that once before during play and a couple times taking practice shots. Shot six under today(personal best)! I think it's the 1st time without a bogey. Biggest change is putting, I had been keeping my index finger on the side along the rim and it turns out that was the hitch I was struggling with. I've also took out some motion from the tee and settled with a slight x-step without a run up. Just a slower motion and pulled some power out.

Definitely feel more comfortable and confident putting.

Thats great to hear, Larry! From what I can tell, Vivi is definitely a wealth of disc golf information.

I used to putt with my finger on the side of the rim too. I was stubborn and swore I was still just as accurate. (Even though I couldn’t hit anything further than a 10 foot tap in… ) Then I played a round with some friends in Colorado and I was basically re-taught how to hold the disc while putting. I noticed a drastic improvement improvement in my game after that.

Last disc I bought was a Buzzz - Slipknot x Discraft.

I need to utilize UDisc more to track my practice rounds. I’ve gotten into the habit of playing very casually, ace running anything I can and usually throwing multiple discs per hole just for the fun of it.

Also, I hear so much praise for the Buzzz but I still haven’t given it an honest try yet. Coincidentally though I just found one that someone lost at the course today. I threw it twice just to give the mold a try. I liked it and will probably get one of the new Buzzz Saw versions when it get’s released for retail.



Cool stamp and looks like it might be custom dyed. Tough colors for throwing in the fall because it blended in very easily with the leaves. Probably has some value to the owner. I texted the owner and they weren’t at the course anymore but they agreed to me hiding it at the course for them to retrieve at another time. Sent them photos with its location so hopefully they were able to get it back.

the buzz is a great disc. it was the first mid I ever clicked with. the guy that got me started gave me a gator of all things, so throwing a buzz was night and day for achieving straight shots.

these days I think the axis and hex have surpassed it, but there was a time it was THE straight flying mid off the shelf. flew like a perfectly seasoned kc pro roc without the break in stage.

Great thread. My younger brother has been playing for a little while, and a couple weeks ago I played with him for the first time. I know nothing whatsoever about technique with disc golf, so reading up on @vivi's and @Mushroom's tips will be very helpful!

Got this disc at a local shop during a Black Friday sale and it is immediately one of my favorites for distance.

Clash Discs Wild Honey in steady ring plastic


I’ve thrown it about a dozen times on the course and this disc is truly finding distance that I didn’t know I had. It has such an easy to control turn and I just love how much glide it has. It has a reliable fade back too so it really carries well while trying to fight out of the turn. This is my second Clash disc but I’m definitely going to try out some more based on how this disc feels and flies.

Just got my ticket to the third annual DISC East Expo happening here in Massachusetts in a couple weeks.

I attended the first event last year when it was known as the New England Disc Golf Expo and it was a good time. Met a bunch of cool people including some pro players like Paul McBeth and Simon Lizotte! Got some discs signed and even got early access to a prototype disc from Discraft at the time - the Kratos. Overall it's a great time and I'm looking forward to it again this year.
