Ready for an Endura

#1

Post by RugerNurse »

I’ve decided on picking up an Endura since I often carry a Swiss army Tinker, the 3.75" Endura blade will be a good balance of a larger blade. Can’t decide between the K390 and PD1 sprint. Any large cons to either of of those?

Depends on your priorities, but two that come to mind are corrosion resistance and weight. Which, considering I prioritize those attributes, is why I pick Pacific Salts over Enduras.

Pacific Salts also have a larger opening hole that's easier to use.

If you don't care about that stuff, K390 will hold an edge longer and have higher edge stability, while PD1 will.be tougher and sharpen up with a bit less effort. PD1 has a coating too which helps offset the lack of corrosion resistance. K390 doesn't rust up anywhere near as fast as 1095 or O1 but it will require a little more attention than standard VG10.

Buy the PD#1. It's a sprint run and will only be available for a short time. The K390 is regular production, so you could get it later.
Either one will have superior edge retention when compared to a SAK.

Yeah I'll vote pd-1 also. You can get the k390 later. Can't have just one! Let the sickness begin

How is the coating on the sprint run? I don’t like coatings but willing to make an exception

That's a tough decision. The knives I typically carry are K390 or Cruwear, and I think the Pd#1 is like Cruwear, but just a skosh better. The performance of both will be good, so that leaves aesthetics. What color looks better to you? Go with that. I had a similar dilemma with the Stretch 2 XL. I chose PD#1 because this is a Sprint. If I hate it, then I can always get the K390 when it's released.

Both are great steels, can’t go wrong with either. I think the bigger choice would be if you want a coating or not. Generally I prefer not to have a coating on my knives so I went with the Endela in K390.

Can’t go wrong either way.

Good luck.

Both the Micro-Melt PD#1 and the K390 are great choices. And I understand the attraction of the sprint being a limited run …. but I just have a weakness for the K390 … And being discontinued, the serrated K390 Endura for around $90 was just irresistible to me 🤟

(And I like liners in my knives )

(And they are still out there for around $90 ! )

That’s a tough choice, but I like ease of sharpening. I’d rather do it more often and have a tougher steel. I love cruwear and pd1 is basically the same thing. I say go pd1 and use it like a rented machine.

As others have said, the k390 is regular production

I still like my vg10 enduras.

But above all else… PAC SALT. The ultimate endura.

I love the Endura but I agree with vivi. If you can afford it get the Pacific Salt. It is 100 percent rust proof and same size and shape.

I think you are making a stellar choice with the Endura. This is one of my favorite knives. K390 is plain awesome and is my favorite tool steel and one of my favorite steels period. The PD-1 is not going to hold an edge as long, but it still holds an edge for a long time and is tough. The coating gives it good corrosion resistance, too. You can't go wrong with either, so what do you want, edge holding or corrosion resistance and toughness? Or, which color do you like best? Me? I've got my blue K390 next to me right now.

I can get behind the Endura.
Even as one who has smallish hands and generally prefer linerless and high corrosion resistance (salts), I find myself carrying my Endura a lot. It quite literally shelved my Endela which has been collecting dust ever since I added the Endura to spyder family.

Which steel? Honestly, between these two steels I think it comes down to aesthetics. And to some degree corrosion resistance. K390 hasn’t been as prone to corrosion as I feared, but if you suspect corrosion might be an issue, I think there is obvious benefit in going with coated PD#1. Otherwise I don’t consider these two steels to be wildly different enough to chose one over the other just based on steel properties if say you hate coatings or just really like the looks of one.

I’m not a fan of coating and really like the blue on the K390. I don’t have much experience with non stainless much my carbon Opinel didn’t really rust on me. I’m leaning towards the K390. I just hope sharpening it goes ok.

I think you want the K390 and it is indeed amazing steel! Practice basic maintenance and you can prevent major rust but it will get a patina. The sprint is fun but plum handle and black blade is not gonna be for everyone LOL.

In addition to the K390 and the PD#1, M4 is available at BladeHQ for $109 with a TiCN black coating.

I'd recommend the K390, but all three are worth having.

I'd get three, hear me out please!

First, grab the PD#1 sprint now, it's a sprint! I'm not particularly fond of coated blades or that plum color, but if PD#1 is anything remotely close to Cru-wear, you'll definitely like this steel.

Next, just spent 2 maybe 3 minutes looking, National Knives has the serrated K390 Endura for $97.50, that's a screaming deal on a phenomenal knife, don't miss out on one of these before they get gone, you'll be sorry!

Third, the next time the big MAP (or is it MAPP?) sale comes along, pick up a serrated Pacific Salt for all things nasty work related, it's a do everything workhorse! Ideally the OG Pacific Salt 1 would be nice, which I have, but I also have the serrated FFG Green LC200N Pacific Salt and I have to say I like it just as much as my old H1 hollow grind PS, just two great knives!

It's just money!

Edit....
If I (you) were to only get one, I'd have to jump on that serrated K390 deal from National, now if you don't like serrated knives, well then, you know what you have to do. That M4 that shunsui linked is a great option also....if you like mint green?

You can Rit-dye the plum colored scale black easy enough also. I am not a big fan of the coated blades either, but if my k390- Police4 had the DLC coating on it, that would help it alot.

This summer it has been so hot here in Texas that the side of the blade that sits against your leg while in your pocket will and does actually rust badly... Even with regular wipe down with an oily rag.

I really like the K390 steel, enough so that I am thinking on have this company that does DLC coating, blast prep and coat the blade on my Police4 with the K390 steel.

As mentioned already, it's just money. As for the Endura, I have a couple of them and like them alot. Can't go wrong with any of them I my opinion for what that's worth to you...
