Endura, Delica, Endela. Why not Native Chief, Native, ??? Native Elder?

I think the Native line deserves something between the Native and Native Chief. I find myself reaching for my Endela more than any other knife I own. I find the length to be that Goldilocks just-right size. I wish it had a finger choil and came in a salt version. Now, we have the Native family in Magnacut and it makes me realize that a Native Elder in MC might be my dream knife.

Agree … and many here do too. Someone even had a sketch for it and it looked to be a winner. I’d go for calling it the “Lil Chief” …. Other names are proposed as well….. and Lil Chief was likely one of them.

On the flip side … since not yet a reality it is one less great Spyderco I don’t have to collect.

That makes sense. Native Chief, Lil Chief, Native, Lil Native.

I agree. I want a Native LW with a 3.5 inch blade 3.0 to 3.5 mm thick with FRN grip.

I mean, kinda?

Endura = 4 inch
Endela = 3.5 inch
Delica = 3 inch

Native Chief = 4 inch
Native = 3 inch
Lil Native = 2.5 inch

One could argue that the dragonfly fills the 2.5 inch slot in the Delica lineup. Or even the Manbug at 2 inches. The DF has a choil so I personally don't put it in the Delica family.

A 3.5 inch Native would be super awesome.

A just under 3.5 inch lockback Native variant is the thing that I want Spyderco to make most. Much more than anything I've seen in their prototype cabinet in the past few years, so my fingers are crossed. I love the Native 5 and lil Native. I'd like to have several a PM2 sized ones. I have a couple Native Chiefs. I have tried to like the Chief, but it hasn't happened thus far.

I think the Shaman putatively fills the gap between the Native Chief and the Native 5. But a more affordable, mid-backlock version of the Shaman (with thinner bladestock to match the Native 5, and slab-sided FRN/FRCP scales instead of contoured G10 to bring down the price further) would slot in perfectly between the two.

The Bodacious is closer-ish than the Shaman imho. The Bodacious has the same thickness (both blade and and handle) as the lockback Native family. If one is used to carrying a Native 5 or lil Native, it feels more familiar. No choil and no superb lockback though.

Another close-ish thing to a 3.5 inch Native was the unlined G-10 Lockback Manix 2. https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... -G-10/1041
It's wider in the pocket and thicker though. It does have that awesome, thunky lockback.

One could argue that but they would be wrong. ;) The Dragonfly is not part of the Endura family. If it is, it's an adopted cousin but really it's more of a family friend. :grin-squint

I understand we all love the Native series but I don't believe Spyderco is immune from the "too much of a good thing" effect. Wharncliffes are awesome but wharncliffing everything turned out to be a mistake. That said, if Spyderco believes a 3.5" Native is something that should be in their catalog then so be it. Maybe it will get magnacut too.

I think the Edgerati has good potential to satisfy the requests for a 3.5" addition to the Native series. :bug-white-red :respect

I've handled the Edgerati prototype. It's very cool, but it's a "no" on satisfying the desire for a 3.5inch Native. The blade shape on the proto is actually a departure from the Native series and no lockback.

Of course not. Why would anything but getting exactly what we want ever be acceptable?! :thinking ;)

On a serious note though, it obviously has its differences but there are still some similarities that fit the part. The blade shape is effectively a straight spine Shaman with a thinner blade stock. With the Shaman already kind of being the de facto variant of 3.5" Native, a version of it with thinner blade stock isn't too far off from that either, if not more so. Also for what it's worth, the Edgerati does not use the typical compression lock. It has been refined to be flush with no scale cutout to help remedy the hotspot complaints. Again, I know it's not exactly what's being requested but with an open mind, I think it might be able to fill that role.

Nah. The production Bodacious is much much closer to a 3.5 inch Native 5 than the Edgerati proto is. The Bodacious has exactly the same handle thickness and blade thickness as the Native 5. It also has a similar blade shape.

The lock difference is another thing.

I used to want a 3.5-inch backlock Native, but then I started carrying the Endela more and more and realized that it already filled this niche well.

I have medium sized hands so the choil on the Native 5 doesn't do anything for me. YMMV.

LOL! Yeah OK... I wasn't arguing, it's not that serious.

Elder is perfect.

Any current PM steel would be fine, S90V, MC, 4v, 3v, Rex45 (obviously, so I could complete the set :-) or CW would be ideal.

Dragonfly doesn’t have to be in any family when it’s the greatest knife they make :squinting-tongue

I think you nailed especially having all of these knives . Spyderco could make it in different varieties and just a matter of what works best for your needs . Dan
