Ladybug lock doesn’t sound strong

#1

Post by hobbyist »

I just got a new vg10 ladybug SE. the lock doesn’t click as loud as my ladybug salt does. I can’t make it fail with medium force. Have people seen some knives don’t click open with as much authority? Is there any correlation to machining issues or lock failure?

I have several manbugs but I wanted a SE for my keychain that wasn’t a wharncliffe. Manbug only has SE wharnie.

Could there be any gunk in the pivot or the notch where the lock bar seats when opened?

They don't all sound the same. I have several Native 5 LWs and the sound varies on those too. I don't worry about how they sound as long as there's no lint or anything preventing them from working properly. Do they lock up solid? If yes move on with life

I've sold perfectly functional knives that I didn't like the sound of.

Have no fear, boys and girls. I'm here to answer the burning question that has us all scratching our heads like monkeys with mange.

Which knife has the strongest sound? With the help of my handy dandy audio analytics app, I compared the sounds of the Ladybug K390, Delica K390 SE, and Manix LW REX45. They're tested in that order on the attached graph.

It's clear that the Manix is the weakest sounding knife. The Delica is easily the strongest. The Ladybug is in the mediocre middle.

It could be that the Salt is more of a different knife than it seems. For example a Salt 2 looks a lot like a Delica but they're more different than they are alike. There may be differences in the lock back spring strength or just how they designed the lock. Is the VG10 an older production model than the Salt? As in, have they tweaked the lock/spring in newer Ladybug generations and the Salt is just better?

I like a strong lock that isn’t overly noisy. I like being able to hear that it engaged, but don’t want to attract attention from people nearby.

I have had some of my different knifes that I didn't like the sound of the lock engagement, I just put a little more bend in the spring and that was that!!!

I like the snap in the lock up, loud and proud...
