EDC Fixed Blade

#1

Post by dmarcellus1 »

Eric/Sal,
I enjoy my mule team knives and never want to see that program discontinued. However, I feel like Spyderco is missing out on a large market share by not having a small premium edc fixed blade. I absolutely use my Giant Mouse GMF1 almost every day because it's small enough to be concealed but can perform most EDC tasks. It comes with a killer sheath. So is there anything in your lineup currently that I am missing out on...or have you just not produced much for this segment of the marketplace? I don't think you need to make a million versions of edc fixed blades...but one really really strong variation would be nice.

The Swick (pictured below) probably comes closest to the GMF1 in terms of overall length.

There's also the Street Beat, Street Bowie and Stok in this size range.

Going a bit larger you have the Ronin 2, Enuff, Enuff 2 and Moran. I'm probably missing a few, but those are what I can think of at the moment.

I've always wanted a fixed blade GB1 in a steel like Cru-wear or Rex 45. The folder already behaves much like a fixed blade when opened, this would just make it stronger and (I imagine) cheaper to produce. And maybe would be a way to get the GB1 back. :winking-tongue

Having a GB1 I have always said a GB1 in a fixed blade would be awesome. M4 would do me.

Having picked up a Spyderco GB Junction when they were discontinuing was a bonus. Love the junction as a throw in the bag knife for holidays and work trips. (Saved me heaps staying in hotel appartments with dreadful blunt knives)

I also would love a smaller EDC fixed blade, but I haven't bought enough knives recently for Spyderco to listen to me. :winking-tongue

The Enuff 2 in K390 is about the closest I've seen to what I want. I wouldn't mind a more neutral handle.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I know I sound like a broken record, but we really need another run of the Junction.
I'd probably want something smaller for EDC myself, but if there's a market there and that could make it happen - I'm all for it :D

Province reduced by, let's say, 65%. 4v and micarta, I don't even need the sculpted handles...

I played around with one for probably 5 minutes a couple weeks ago at a gun show, this vendor made me a great price on it but it's just too small for me! Great design, great blade shape and the build quality was perfect, again just too small for me. It seemed smaller than the 5.11" it's listed at on paper. Need something to split the difference between this Subway Bowie and the Street Beat, around 6.5" to 6.75".

I'd love to see them bring out something with micarta and tool steel, like a LTW Frontier Valley, Small Workhorse, or Next Gen, or something like a Bradford Guardian 3 or 3.2.

For myself smallest I really carry for fixed blades is the street beat. I have a spartan enyo but the sheath doesn't offer enough retention. I'm carrying a 3V SRK today and most days recently. I'm not much for small fixed blades. I have a swick but again it doesn't see much use neither does my ark. I prefer at least 4" for general use but I also carry the Respect on weekends.

The Subway Bowie really shines with a lanyard. Without one I find it a little small and awkward but with a lanyard for my ring and pinky fingers to get a hold of it’s just about perfect for me.

It's rare that I say a handle is too small, but the Subway bowie was too small for me as well. I like the ratio of blade to handle, I think it's a fair tradeoff for EDC fixed blades to be front heavy, but I was fooled by the pictures (and didn't read the specs thoroughly enough) and got a mini version of the knife I had imagined. I think as little as a 1/2" inch in both ends would have made it a totally different beast. And much more in line with what I anticipated.
I haven't tried the Street Beat, but I am tempted to give it a try after my failed attempt with the Subway. But I fear you are correct in that the ideal size is probably in between, and that the Street Beat wouldn't feel quite right either.

I like the Subway Bowie and find it most usable with two small beads on a short fob. Set up like that it's a fantastic compact, but usable knife.

I’ve often thought how good a Spyderco made ESEE Izula 2 would be. A brilliantly capable EDC knife but with a premium Spyderco approved steel and edge geometry.

Anyway I think there could be a market for a compact but full neutral-handled, 2.5” ish bladed knife with a performance oriented geometry.

You could always take a Moran or an Enuf and cut down the blade to whatever size you want (just keep it cold while cutting/grinding).

The Enuff is only 2.75", isn't it?

I had a Tops street scalpel years ago which was a near miss. It was a real slab of a knife, and pretty heavy for what it was, but it was unique in that it had a full hand-filing handle but only maybe a 2” blade. It was an awesome concept just didn’t quite work as well as I had hoped.

The sheath was also deep enough to cover most of the handle, which made it much more carryable than if the sheath only covered the blade - I feel like a lot of knives have sheaths that are too shallow for real security when they’re carried.

I like the Enough 2, and plan to buy a SE and PE in K390, probably in July. I spent too much in June already. :woozy
