Grit estimation on Soyderco Benchstones

#1

Post by RazorSharp86 »

So I finally wore out my Spyderco Double stuff.
Even though I mostly use Atoma diamond plates or Naniwa Wahetstones for most of my sharpening, I liked having the ceramic hand sharpener for touch-up and quick honing.
I’m considering just buying the medium and fine benchstones to supplement the retired Double Stuff hone. Any idea what grit these are at?

Mine behave like about 1500 and 3000 grit.

According to

https://www.chefknivestogoforums.com/vi ... .php?t=196
  • medium is at 15 micron,
  • fine at 6 micron
  • and ultrafine at 3 micron.
Conversions to various grit measurement standards can be found in the linked spreadsheet as well.

I have, many times. I’ve owned this double stuff for too long to remember. I used an Atoma 140 to lap it, and it flattened it. It’s way too work, however, at this time.

It seems like these ceramic stones of Spyderco's are truly unique among most other sharpening stones on the market. For touch ups and minor sharpening jobs I find them to be indispensable. I take some of my Spyderco sharpening tools with me no matter where I go.

The 204 Sharpmaker is a genius idea. Spyderco's sharpening gear is every bit as high of quality as their cutlery is.

Not sure what grit equivalents the stones are but they are truly unique in the market of sharpening tools..

I agree.
My go to kit for touchups and quick sharpening jobs (when the edge isn’t in too bad of shape).

Ceramic stones are not graded in grits like sandpaper, where the abrasive particles pass through a specific size of mesh to be sized. We also use the same basic size of abrasive particles in all our stones. Their final coarseness is then carefully controlled through the other materials in the ceramic (“carriers”), the firing process, and, in some cases, abrasive grinding processes to achieve a final finish. By comparing the scratch patterns of sharpened edges to those sharpened by conventional abrasives, the following grit-size comparison may be made:

ULTRA FINE -- 2,000 grit
FINE -- 1,200 grit
MEDIUM -- 600 grit

Our diamond and CBN sharpeners are mostly 400 mesh. The CBN Benchstone (206CBN) is 400 on one side and 800 on the other. The Webfoot is 600 mesh.

I hope this helps.

Stay safe,

Mike

Thanks for this, Michael.
I figured that the grit rating would be different, and was only but looking for a rough idea as to what they’d be comparable to, more or less. You gave me the answer I came looking for.

This is why I love the brand, and its people. Because communities like these exist, where you can get answers from ppl who give a dmn and know their stuff.

Much appreciated.
