My key on a knife solution

#1

Post by zhyla »

My trusty Lil Matriarch is my running knife. I typically run with just a knife, key, and phone. I'm always a bit paranoid about my key bouncing out of my pocket and getting lost so I've been wanting to attach it to my knife securely. I've got thru a couple attempts and previously was using a tiny carabiner to attach the key to the Spydie hole (very awkward).

I'd been meaning to design and 3d print something that attaches to the unused clip holes on left side of the knife. And if it worked well maybe I would stick it up on Shapeways and sell it. Never got a good design though. Instead I realized this might actually be a good use of a lanyward. I'm typically anti-lanyward, lanyward holes ruin good knife designs, etc, etc... well, it's coming in handy in this case.

The key stays out of the way while in the pocket. In the hand it kind of slides out of the way when you draw it. Not bad overall.

I keep a mini carabiner on my essential keys and clip them to a flip belt when I run.

I like it.

My usual key ring is on my wallet, which also contains my ID, medical insurance cards, fishing license and a credit card. I don't really need all that stuff for a bike ride, since I wear a Road ID for all outdoor activities. Plus, a long ride soaks the wallet and everything in it, which is gross. I rotate among a few Salt folders for riding, but this idea might cause me to just pick one (probably an H1/H2 Pacific) and stick with it.

Nice idea. Bravo!

This might not be practical where you are but I leave my keys well hidden outside my apartment, which completely eliminates the issue. I used to put my key, plus a credit card and a couple of wet wipes in a small ziplock bag and stuff it in my back pocket on my running shorts, but it was a bit of an annoyance as it bounced and was generally irritating.

The more I think about it, the more ingenious I think your idea with the knife is. I wonder if I can make this work with my D’fly salt SE (my running knife of choice).
