Post by Ric »

Which folder will be the first one in HIC?

(list below might be wrong as it is to my best knowledge / memory)
Spy27: Para 3 lightweight
LC200N: UKPK (edit: Native 5 lightweight is wrong)
HIC: ???

Do we even know if it can be used in folders?

Personally I wouldn’t conflate the existence of the HIC Mule with being able to produce a folder in that same material.

Yeah, I have to agree with Mushroom. It might be a challenge just trying to talk the vendors into it. There would be issues doing it in Golden. I'm sure if they wanted it bad enough they could by assigning enough resources to it but would it be worth the time and effort doing it?

The old ones put out by Boker ( different materials) in folding knives were not all that impressive to me and they went in a drawer in short order and I finally sold both.

If any body could make it worthwhile it would be Spyderco.

How about the Military 2? That is my guess.

We'll see how the Mule Team does. That will make or break it as a knife blade material.

Was the HIC Mule made in Taiwan?

In the past, I've seen ceramic blades put into Gentleman's folders, and I think that's where the material does best. I think these were the Boker knives that Mastiff mentioned.

I'm not sure how much HIC differs from traditional ceramic blades, but I would expect something small, thin, and light to be an ideal candidate. Maybe a UKPK? Maybe a Lil' Native?

Agreed.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

The Mule is double the price of normal Steel Mules. So couldn’t see it being that widespread anytime soon.

I have had one of the Bokers, a big issue I have seen with others is the lock slamming closed. I have had mine tuned so it can’t be “flicked” open since I bought it and never had an issue.

My suggestion would be possibly a slipit. I bought mine knowing I was going to rarely carry it, just thought it would be cool to have and it is.

I don’t understand the point of it, not trying to be snarky. Does it hold an edge really well? I thought ceramic would break easily

My understanding is, this new HIC is getting closer to some of the more brittle steel we use these days in toughness. Get sharper and can hold an edge for a very long time….. however it is very difficult to sharpen, even for the factory.

I'd like to see something akin to the Blackie Collins non-metallic folder.

Ceramic blade, G10 push button lock with berilyium copper spring, delrin pivot and screws, carbon fiber pocket clip.
