Current Salt models - hardware differences?

#1

Post by Wallach »

These are mostly questions for Sal or anyone else that works at Spyderco (or those that may have already seen them answer these questions), but what are the current Salt models using for hardware to resist corrosion? I know the newest Salt models seem to have coated screws and pocket clips; are these being DLC coated to help fight galvanic corrosion? Also, someone took apart their Manix 2 Salt LW over on a subreddit and showed that the ball bearing appeared to be ceramic rather than steel, though in his images it looked like it could have been coated or treated steel instead. I'm curious if the spring in that model is also different for increasing corrosion resistance.

This is all proprietary knowledge that they keep close. Sal hasn't answered these inquiries in the past with any detail. I completely understand the privacy needs.

The important answer is that in most situations there will not be corrosion issues. if you have rust) corrosion/ pitting issues on a Salt, Spyderco will be interested in researching the cause and will likely offer a replacement.

All I know is that the black coating on my Pacific Salt has been chipping off, slowly but surely.
Also, it appears that these are more prone to backing out, unless very heavily threadlocked.

That’s my experience, at least.

Great questions, I also wonder why the lock bar is coated in black on the Manix Salt and incongruously sits against the silver metal blade (visually speaking only of course), while the Native has a silver metal lock bar and flows so nicely together with the blade on the spine. The black bar on the Manix makes me wish for a DLC blade to match up with it.

For the clips, I’m pretty sure the US models are using coated steel, where the JP models are using coated titanium.
I see, said the blind man.
