MagnaWear Easter Egg?

#1

Post by tcarltonw »

So I subscribe to Dr. Larrin's Patreon and think I may have found an easter egg hint at a new steel... or is MagnaWear something I haven't heard of?

Right?! Seeing how T15 and a cpl of other mules were hinted at this way, I'm hoping this is offered as a mule too.

Wow! Larrin has said that the next theoretical step would be to add more vanadium to Magnacut for higher edge retention. If this is real, I can't wait to see the toughness and corrosion resistance.

I read stuff about a higher wear resistance version of Magnacut as well. Cool :open-grin
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Larrin is going to monopolize the knife steel market...! He'd better be wary of the DOJ's Antitrust Division... (J/K)

Higher edge retention...now I'm interested. I've been pretty unimpressed with Magnacut on my CRK. I've given it two different finishing grits (220 and 800) and haven't found it to be that great with either. Honestly I don't understand everyone clamoring for Magnacut...unless it's one of those things were 6 people here say it's great so everyone reads it and suddenly 29348723947 people think it's the best and want every knife in it...even though they've never tried it, or have it and have never done anything with it besides a little touch up here or there.

Well, he can't break the laws of chemistry and physics, but let's hope he can push them to the edge.

Anything with that much edge retention will give up toughness and corrosion resistance. But if he can keep both of those on the upper side of 5ish while having that level of ER, that IS something to write home about.

Wow, the web version on the patreon doesn't have it now, maybe Larrin fixed that? however the version sent to the Email probably can't be modified so still have MagnaWear in the pic.

i remember seeing magnawear and magnatuff brought up in the past. i thought i saw in an article that he was going to continue development, so it shouldn't be surprising really.

i haven't been able to use my one magnacut blade (mule) as much as i'd like, but i've liked it so far and i'm hoping to get some more in a folder soon so i have more opportunities to use it.

My experience with magnacut has been good, but the stainlessness isn't something that's super important to me (which is why my favorite steel has long been 4v/v4e). I'm excited to see Larrin pioneer a non-stainless steel, focusing on wear resistance (and hopefully edge stability?). If that's what this is, it will become a new go-to for me.

Higher edge retention...now I'm interested. I've been pretty unimpressed with Magnacut on my CRK.
Any idea what CRK's heat treat is like (for magnacut)?

I've been quite happy with the magnacut on my BRK Little Creek II and my Bradford Guardian 3. I do not own any CRK magnacut, though.

My top priority in a small fixed blade is not edge retention--it's more about stability and a limited ability to be 'abusive' to the edge. Magnacut is doing as well in this regard as 4v in my Guardian 3s.

My top priority in a folder tends to be edge retention, though, so I'm very interested in this steel.

I believe CRK does theirs at 63-64 HRC.

A check of the Sebenza 31 had this on the specs for MagnaCut: 63-64 RC

Wasn't sure if I should say anything seeing that it was patreon but figured, if anything, it'd be another reason for people to subscribe. Honestly, I figured to get replies that someone had posted about it already.

Nice catch. Thanks for sharing. Definitely up there with the 10V class steels. Interesting.
