Reveal 15: Shivering with Anticipation

#1

Post by RustyIron »

If we can make predictions from past Reveals, it might be another week or so until we see v15.

I'm trying not to care. It can take months until the revealed knives hit the streets, so what's the point of getting excited? I'd really like a serrated Manix LW, but recently a lot of serrated knives have been discontinued. Does that mean that Spyderco is focusing on plain edges for the time being? Or maybe they're clearing out all the old serrated edges because they're preparing to reveal something even better. Or maybe, just maybe, there is something entirely new that's coming from the Top Secret Facility in Golden.

What are we supposed to do between now and the next Reveal?
All these uncertainties are driving me mad!

😂 i feel this statement.

it would be really great to see a couple of military 2 salts in the same vein as the pm2 salts. a spy27 military 2 would be sweet as well.

manix versions of these would be great too, but i'm not going to get my hopes up for something like that yet.

i'd love to see a blacked out stretch 2 xl salt and a green lc200n version.

I can´t understand why there still is no Manix 2 LW SE... and yes, serrated knives got discontinued, but quite some new models or variations came in both PE and SE right from the start (Stretch XL in VG10 and H2, Native Chief LW in BD1N, LC and MC, the Chap will get an SE version and some more examples)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I was also really hoping for a MagnaCut Manix LE Serrated. I might end up just getting the Stretch XL Salt as it could be months but probably a year or two before we see the Manix Salt SE. I feel like if it was coming they would have announced it along side the PE.

I think the Stretch will fit the bill just wish it had a little better steel than H2.

I thought the reveals were not gonna drop "schedully" anymore. My understanding was that a big reveal like Reveal 14 would leave us with no reveal for a good amount of time.

If a Reveal 15 is coming, I hope we'll see the Piute in it !
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Good idea! Makes sense, the pacific salt black blade sees to do well. The yellow handle has not grown on me at all.

As for Reveal 15 I am not needing or expecting to see any new models for a little while because they're still working on shipping so many previously announced knives.

especially since many of us long time pac salt fans think that the stretch 2 xl salt will replace the pacific in our daily carry. the pacific will always hold a special place in my heart, but the s2xl has unquestionably better ergonomics and just a hair more edge. it's such a great design.

Hoping for Chaparral news since they retired half the lineup from the current catalog, IIRC 🤔

I hope you guys who want serrated get your wish, but it's no mystery why there aren't more serrated blades in knives. People tend not to by SE in the quantities they buy PE. It's a small market segment that wants SE, and those who do buy SE, tend to buy it in relatively small quantities (with rare but notable exceptions!). The data hints that the ratio is around 7:1 or 8:1, PE:SE, and this data was from Spyderco diehards, who probably buy more SE than most brand loyalists. So you can see why a knife manufacturer would prioritize PE--to stay in business, they have to go where the market goes. Think of all the mfgrs who don't do any SE at all. If the market were there, they likely would. Graphic from last year's survey.

Makes sense, out of the 10 or so Spydercos I have I just bought my second SE, Stretch XL Salt, and I think it is all I will need for a while in SE.

I think I'm confused on how the Reveals work - didn't we just get 14? Is it once per quarter?
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Good points when it comes to the general proportion of SE knives Spyderco makes!

But: Exactly looking at that whole picture (Spyderco and SE) it IS a mystery why there is no SE MANIX.

Again: While it is true what you say, they still bring out a lot of models, often new ones or variants of existing in both PE and SE (and sometimes CE) - also very recently (Bodacious, Stretch XL LW in VG10 and H2; Native Chief LW in three steel options; Native 5 Salt; Lil Native LW; Millie; Para 3 LW.....)

So the do SE and they anticipate that people want and buy SE.

Now the Manix has a huge "following" already, many like it, and even if the general proportion of those who like SE is not that big: There just has to be quite an intersection of those who like both the Manix and SE, and a Manix SE would be a guaranted seller (also there will be a lot of collectors who would get a Manix SE just as a unique variant).

And "all" Spyderco would have to do is grinding teeth in a proportion of Manix LWs they make.

And when it comes to Salt knives: There it is really not the exception, but rather the norm that they do also come in SE.
Must be a reason for that, right?
So why no teeth exactly for the Manix 2 Salt ??

(Like I said in the dedicated thread I started on this (viewtopic.php?t=95667#p1748541) this is not meant as a complaint, I am just wondering..)

I'm just waiting on things already revealed. Looking forward to comparing a Native Chief Salt to the Stretch Salt, and keeping an eye out for the Catcherman and Crucarta Manix XL to drop.

There is so much good stuff in the queue that we already know about. The induced demand is strong. The mystery only makes it stronger.
