Favorite Spydercos You Got in 2023 - In Your Pocket in '24

Post by kriezek »

Another year, another knife, or 2, or 3, or .... But we all have our favorites no matter how many or few we get. So if you were lucky enough to put some Spydercos in your collection in 2023, what were they in order of preference and why? Tell your story. Pictures help.

Also, 2024 portends to be a GREAT year with lots of nice offerings to make the wallet thinner and the drawers or shelves heavier along with another one for the rotation. What is on your radar?

In order of preference, I was lucky enough to add a PM2 with S90V and suingab scales which has found its way into my pocket more often than not. My new Sliverax is so smooth and sweet, I look for ways to use it. Even my wife has offered up suggestions. And while the Stretch 1 in HAP40 is an oldie, I was able to pick that up BNIB this year thanks to some folks here on the forum. It stays in the kitchen for now working on fruit and such. I really like the Stretch 1 design.

While I picked up a couple of others, these were my favorites. I really thought I would like the Native 5 more than I do. I guess I really prefer the "medium" knife size (as defined by some, large as defined by others) because all 3 of these are about 3.4" blade lengths.

This year will see a PM2 Salt Magnacut enter the stable as will an HIC Mule if I'm lucky. I may (most likely) will grab something else, but those are what I am sure of right now.

I got the Cru-Wear Stretch XL and the MagnaCut Native LW (and did a blade swap). Eventually I will buy AWT scales with phosphor bronze washers for it. Still very much in the honeymoon phase. :-)

I probablly bought somewhere around a dozen. I like every one of them, but these stood out...

Cruwear para3 (dlt exclusive). my first non stainless spyderco, and i really fell in love with the steel.

Salt2 wharncliffes. I bought a pair of these. A SE h2, and PE LC200N. Theyre sort of the perfect secondary work knives. Shame they also killed these models off.

Native 5 lw magnacut. Im always excited when a new salt comes out, and these were great. While it might not be on my favorite model, or my favorite steel ever. I do really like it. Bridges the gap from my favorite work knives to edc. I used it a lot. Became a go to for work in places with blade length laws, and all sorts of situations away from work. Sort of the perfect balance knife for me.

Had i not just got my new stretch2xl salt SE, and magancut manix like a week ago they may have cracked the list. Really excited about them.

In 2024 im looking forward to the catcherman and spymyto sprints and all the new salts coming out, particularly pm2. Also all the new spy27 models, which has quickly become one of my favorite steels.... might be an expensive year haha.

Quite surprised as I looked back through my photos...I only bought 2 Spyderco knives this past year, and kept them both.

The St Nick's 4V exclusive Military. I bought this because I love the St Nick's red and black combo, as well as 4V being in my top 2 personal favorites. I've got the CF/Ti Military and wanted one of the standard liner lock versions again as well. I don't think there's a better one out there than this.

Image

The REC Pm2 exclusive. I initially bought this, knowing how quickly they flew off the shelves during the first drop, with the intention of selling it to a handful around here that I know were extremely bummed missing out on the first drop. Turns out, the 2nd drop was a slow seller and everyone managed to get one. I decided to keep it, since I only have one other PM2. Figured the different blade finish made it worth keeping, and wanted to see how it's durability compared to DLC or Ticn.

I technically bought 3 in 2023 - the DLT Para 3 in CruWear & Purple G10, the "Stormtrooper" Manix 2 in Rex 45 and white FRCP, and the Manix 2 LW Salt in MagnaCut and yellow FRCP. That said, the Salt isn't going to arrive until tomorrow, so I can't really call it my favorite Spyderco of 2023.

Between the other two, even though I've only had the Stormtrooper for a few days, I can already say I like it much more than my Para 3. Maybe I won't fall in love with Rex 45 with more time on it, but the knife itself just feels amazing in the hand. The CBBL lock fixes my only issue with most crossbar lock style mechanisms, which is how light the detent / initial force is. It feels like a much stronger, sturdier version of that lock, which was already my personal favorite locking mechanism.

Image

I still enjoy my Para 3 - especially at the $140 price point from the Black Friday sales - but I actually don't find myself liking the compression lock as much as I expected to. It still feels like a very sturdy lock, but it's just a bit awkward to close to me, and you have to adjust your hand to kind of a weird position to close it with your fingers out of the blade's way. I almost prefer closing it like a lockback with my thumb, and letting the blade fall so my index catches the front finger choil once it breaks. I do quite like the ergos on it still, and the size of the blade still feels more "right" to me for that blade shape compared to the PM2.

There’s too many to list really but the triumvirate of 15V folders rank pretty high on 2023 acquisitions. The Native 5 in magnacut has had a lot of pocket time this year as well as my PM2, Para 3 and Shaman in S90V. Finished the year on a strong note by ordering the MicroJimbo but I guess I’ll count it for 2024 since that’s when it’ll actually arrive. I’m looking forward to this new year, even if my wallet might not be, lol.

Haha, same here! I had to look back at my photos. I thought the 15V Manix was last year, but it was actually released late in 2022. At least that's when I got mine.

This year I mostly bought discontinued models on sale after the 2023 list came out:

  • K390 Delica wharncliffe
  • K390 Endela wharncliffe
  • Chaparral CF
  • Sage 5 CF
  • 20CV Endura (KJ exclusive)
  • K390 Delica (ordered 12/30, delivered 1/4...does that count as 2023?)
Overall the Sage 5 and the Endela wharncliffe have been getting the most use, though the 20CV Endura did do some field work during deer season.

I think longer term the Endela and Endura will keep getting the most use of this year's purchases. The Sage 5 is excellent but has a lot of competition in that 3" blade range and especially on smaller knives I prefer a back lock. The Chaparral will probably be the new king of "discreet office carry" but I'm not in the office a ton anymore.

For 2024 my resolution is to try out more new designs and not to just get hung up on new flavors of the Seki FRN models, as much as I love them 😅. Looking forward to the Bodacious in particular.

Ha, you're right I probably did get that in 2022. Just shows you what a great knife it is. Still in my pocket pretty regular in 2024.

Been a knife guy for a few years, but never had a Spyderco. It all started in October of 2022. The wife and I took a weekend trip to Denver. On our way in I decided we should stop by the Spyderco Outlet Store. My wife being the awesome wife she is, bought me my first Spyderco. I must say buying my first Spyderco knife at the outlet store in person was absolutely awesome.
Image
From that moment I was hooked. When I got home and registered my knife, I got a 25% off my next online order( **** yous Spyderco lol). After joining this forum and lots of reading and research in February of 2023 the journey began. From top to bottom in the order they were bought.
Image
Plus the other 3 I bought for my boys
Delica 4: gray
Endura 4: orange
Tasman 2 salt: yellow
On the radar so far for 2024 is a Shaman, Manix 2 g-10, Autonomy 2( not sure what steel's yet) and kitchen knives. Sorry for the long post, don't really know any knife ppl here in Junction so I'll share with the knife ppl on this forum :winking-tongue

Edit: Not sure how to get the pictures to show up without the link.

My favorite from 2023 was my 15V Paramilitary 2, because I'm a steel nerd and can't be stopped. My other favorite knife of 2023 was not a Spyderco.... it was my small Sebenza in MagnaCut blade steel with black micarta inlays. Both should get plenty of pocket time in 2024, there's really not much on my radar for "must buy" knives. The ceramic Mule is on the small list, and if the BBB folder shows up that will be on the list also.
