Spyderco Byte December 2023 Feedback

#1

Post by spydergoat »

Check your emails- it's byte day! I am just posting to shout out Spyderco for the December byte and the byte series in general. As always, it was a great read. I appreciate Spyderco for going beyond a simple product update or touch marketing campaign like you would get from other brands. The byte is very in depth and caters to us nerds who want to increase our knife knowledge and understand spyderco's history and design philosophy.

As a big salt fan I appreciated the focus on the Stretch 2XL Salt and the larger Salt line including a comparison of its current steels. Here's a nice shot with the S2XL and some of its predecessors (credit Spyderco 2023 Byte).

This is just amazing

“MagnaCut is capable of achieving relatively high hardness—over 63 RC after conventional heat treatment and 64-65 RC with the added benefit of cryogenic treatment. This gives it edge retention is on par with respected blade materials like CPM S35VN, CPM 4V, and CPM CRU-WEAR. In terms of toughness, it surpasses even non-stainless steels renowned for their toughness, like CPM M4 and A2. Its most surprising quality, however, is its outstanding corrosion resistance, which approaches, but does not equal, that of Vanax and LC200N. Interestingly, even after cryogenic treatment, those steels can only achieve a hardness of 60-61 RC. MagnaCut can achieve higher hardnesses, while still offering outstanding toughness and excellent resistance to corrosion. Based on Spyderco’s extensive in-house testing, its level of corrosion resistance was impressive enough to make it worthy of inclusion in our elite Salt Series.”

There is an error in the photo. There is not a Pro-Venator, but the first Stretch.

Pro-Venator, Pro-Grip, Stretch:

This line really surprised me. from my personal experience with both, always felt that LC200N was a tougher steel. Kind of contradicts Larrins own chart on knifesteelnerds too. But who knows, theyve both both been good to me.

Larrin didn’t test H1/H2 for comparison with other super stainless steels.

I was referring to LC being tougher than magnacut. Sorry, should have been more clear about that..... But that is the chart i was referring too. Larrin is claiming that magnacut isnt as tough as LC (which ive personally experienced to be true also) which conradicts the statement in the byte.

Magnacut CAN do those things, but can it do them simultaneously?
