Folding Prybar

Had a weird thought on the bus today:

Little prybars seem pretty popular in the EDC crowd these days. What if a Dragonfly had a prybar "blade" that was optimized for prying? Maybe it could have a hex bit holder or some other function built in as well.

Would that work?

Now that LynchNW pry bars are readily available, seems unnecessary. The v1.9 ti prybar has about the same footprint as a Dragonfly, without any of the structural problems a pivot would introduce. Fits in a shirt pocket, ultra light weight. Use it all the time to dig those edge killing giant copper staples out of the boxes we get in the lab.

I like Spyderco branded stuff as much as the next, but I doubt a prybar from them would kick the Lynch's out of my pocket.

These fancy prybars sure do look cool, but I'm not willing to sacrifice pocket space for something of limited utility. My two favorite prybars are about five feet and six feet and weigh about twenty pounds. If Sal can invent something that can do the same job and will fit in my pocket, I'll be all over it.

the df2 already gets loose just opening and closing it to perform light duty cutting. it would not withstand lateral force well at all. the lil native might get you closer, but you still can't do much prying with anything that has a pivot on the middle.

I'm sure Sal can figure out a way to fit a 6 foot prybar in my pocket. With a deep carry clip, please, Sal, if you are reading this thread. Lighter weight but just as strong. And I want to be able to switch between curved end down and curved end up carry.

Instead of the blade, maybe the prybar could flow from the handle. Make it an integral and charge $400 for it. Instead of Dragonfly, call it Dragon Scale.

Having a pry tool integral to a metal handle scale sounds reasonable.

I have a very tiny pry tool on my keychain. Saves from ever being tempted to pry with a knife. Opens bottles too. It’s worth having on you.

It is NOT worth spending more than $15 for a pry tool though. Also not worth the space for anything larger.

While I do sometimes carry and find use for a dedicated pocket pry bar, I can usually get by with a SAK, specifically the larger flat driver/pry tool on the bottle opener.

The clipitool is probably the closest thing spyderco offers

Of all the popular EDC items, the prybar and the pen were the ones I needed most time to see how they could fit in and be useful.
The pen/pencil still doesn't enjoy permanent residence in my pockets, it's more on a day by day basis depending on what I'm doing. The prybar found its place and stuck.
I got it wrong at first though. Went with the hype and bought some fancy Atwood (I think) pry thingy. Not my best decision.
Pocket space is precious and this thing was made to claim it's space.
I wasn't about to spend that kind of money on a prybar again, but when I ordered some items off of CountyComm I threw in two small ones, as they were dirt cheap anyways. The flat 3" pry proved to be my jam



It fits nicely inside my wallet and I forget I have it on me. Just how I like it.
I don't even use it on a weekly basis, but as soon as something gets too sketchy for my knife, having this so easily at hand keeps me from temptation.
After I started regularly carrying the Cadet, there is even less need for a dedicated prybar, but I still choose to keep it with me. It's still cheaper and handles more force than a SAK and it's a piece of metal with a slight hint of an edge that's ALWAYS on me, even when I leave my knives for legal reasons (meaning that carry is so hard to justify, I struggle even when applying my own exceedingly liberal interpretation of the law).

A folding prybar sounds like something that would be more fragile, more expensive and take up much more (i.e. dedicated) pocket space than what I have. I'm usually openminded when I see a possibility to justify a better EDC item, but the prybar quest seems to be over for me.
