The Newsweek link is to a story that quotes people, articles and discusses Scientific American articles on the U.S. Air Force, a Department of Defense (DOD) spokesperson and the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review.

There are a lot of Scientific American stories that are readable on their website regarding nukes.

I do not agree with everything said in Newsweek or Scientific American, it's just another look at what is being done by the US Govt regarding nukes.

Read voraciously. Don't be lied too. Read what everyone says.

Yeah, it's Journalism, they did it all right by the numbers.

Read voraciously. Don't be lied too. Read what everyone says.
Best advice anyone can give. There are often more than two sides to a story. Most things published now are written to influence the reader.
And they have links to the source so all the boxes are checked.
You can find all kinds of papers to link to backing pretty much anything you want to depending on your agenda. That scenario is just one example. No where does it explain that the scenario it is talking about needs many more warheads than are available to whatever country would be attacking ie; Russia or China. Warheads amounts are kept track of pretty closely and some cheating is possible but hiding thousands of warheads is unlikely given the reality .

Counting up the total number of ICBM's and assigning an imaginary warhead to it and then figuring out how much radiation would be there heading down wind might be all that they are basing this on. The fact is we don't know so how much trust should we assign this "study" done at Princeton?

What they talk about was true. During the cold war. Not during the last 10-15 years though. If it has changed again, how and to what? I don't have the time to try and access the Princeton study and look for flaws in detail so I won't . I will say Newsweek had nothing of value and it reads as clickbait.

That is why I also suggest reading everything you can but don't believe all you read.

Joe,

Just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it doesn't have some merit.

I am not saying believe everything, or dwell on it either.

The real numbers of how many Warheads various Countries have on hand and or that are deployable are not given.

They never really are. ;)

And don't get me started on Bio Weapons and Chemical Weapons.

ICBM's are just one form of deployment.

I wouldn't put too much stock in any of it really, if a major Nuclear War (NBC War) does break out the human race (Society) for the most part is toast.

I do hope we don't find out how wrong you really are, just saying. ;)

And we never have to see this:

Well it's not something to really dwell on because if it happens it really won't make much difference.

99.9% of the population doesn't have the monetary resources to afford something that actually would make a difference.

And maybe survive it intact and with their sanity and general health.

No, I really don't want to think about it too much either, think about millions of people that want what you have. And with little to no resources to sustain life, good food and water.

The collapse of Government as we know it, anarchy, that is worst case scenario really.

That's for the ones who survive the Nuclear, chemical and BIO weapons.

Also with no medical etc and everything for the most part down, infrastructure, diseases will run rampant also.

Isn’t this really about justifying funds to replace obsolete weapons? As ever, some will try and make the case that just because a functioning deterrent hasn’t been used, it isn’t necessary.

They are supposed to replace the Minuteman ICBM's with a newer model, higher yield warheads too.

Jim, we are NBC ( or at least BC) free and so are Russia and china.

https://www.npr.org/2023/07/07/11865509 ... that-means

The 30,000 tons we alone held are now gone. We had the last of them supposedly. If an attack is done now it wouldn't be official but instead it would be done just like it happened with Covid. We all know covid was an accident though, right ? :)

After my NBC training in the Army it was the biological and chemical warfare I was more concerned about. Scary, scary stuff! I hope that stuff really is gone.

The official response to Chemical and Biological attacks are nuclear weapons so it is pretty easy to understand why our government was so fast to deny the PRC's role in Covid, whatever it actually was.

The problem with that is much of America doesn't trust our own president when it comes to dealing with the PRC as he is compromised from decades of selling influence through family members with China being the biggest buyer.

Joe,

I wouldn't bet on all the B/C being gone. ;)

I was also an NBC Specialist/Trainer.

NO, Covid was what they said it was, it wasn't a BIO Weapon or an accident like so many want (Need) it to be. (Conspiracy theories never help anything)

If COVID was indeed a BIO weapon we all wouldn't be talking right now, 1/2 to 3/4 of the world human population would be gone if it was. ;)

It spread all over the planet like it did due to blind stupidity and completely ignoring all the protocols.

Makes me wonder if something really bad ever hits... We are in serious trouble I can tell you.

All Chem and bio weapons weren't designed to kill . Even the most lethal of the biologic s that were designed to be were not 100% fatal. Scientists looking at the genetics of COVID quite clearly stated it was artificially enhanced to make it more communicable. We know where it came from so it was either a planned or an accidental release. The PRC's official position at first was that US agents/soldiers released it there in an attack. They stopped saying that when our own government leaned on the tech companies to stop talk of it being anything but a natural occurrence. Epidemiologists here in the US and IIRC England had their accounts muzzled for releasing the truth online.

Nothing is 100% fatal except certain strains of Ebola.

That's why I said 1/2 to 3/4. ;)

A lot of that garbage is conspiracy theories to cater to certain groups programing them to make them feel better. :eye-roll

Ah you know the CDC and W.H.O. both have the original strain of the Spanish Flu.

It's all on the CDC website, how they found it in a frozen solid person in the artic who had died from it.

Until a better solution comes along I think that we need to have a continuous system of updates to our nuclear arsenal.

No Jim, not garbage or propaganda but news that is still available with a search engine. It does sound like conspiracy theory stuff on a late night radio show but it wasn't. I promise you that. If you really want something that sounds crazy a couple years before that some PLA Generals ( retired) wrote an outline of how they could take down the USA and a biological attack that sounds a lot like Covid ( meaning not Anthrax, Smallpox, The Plague, etc.) being mostly non fatal but designed to cause chaos was one part of the plan. It's thought one reason for China's purchasing genetic testing companies is because they want to develop bio weapons designed to target people by ethnic groups.

I am still interested in what practical (non-snarky) steps can be taken to increase post-nuke survival, but for some reason, this thread has veered away from the practical. Maybe we can veer it back on track.

Unless you are a Billionaire and can afford a huge Shelter with tons of food and water that will last 20 years or more. Plus heat and good airflow that is filtered. And all of the supplies needed as in BIO Hazard/NBC supplies because we don't know what we are going to get hit by.

Think those Structures in Antartica that the scientists live and work in. Likely the best place to be, that and New Zealand maybe.

But with supplies to last for more than 20 years including backup and fuel for the power generators etc.

Going to have to survive the Nuclear Winter.

Really though anyplace in North America and Europe/Asia is going to be for the most part is not survivable really.

For the rest it will depend on how bad the Nuclear Winter is and the Contamination.

I know that goes against the Preppers/survivalists ultimate dream come true, but things just are how they are.

VERY, VERY low percentage survival rate really. And most of that will depend on were you live outside of the War Zones.

I am in agreement with Ankerson as far as surviving a nuclear war where more than 30 nuclear weapons are fired off, and these fools have thousands.

But you can prep for survival for almost everything right up to the point of nuclear annihilation. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, short duration in Summer or Winter where you do not have natural gas or electricity due to terrorism or solar EMP, bioterrorism up to a point for some agents, being jumped in an alley....you can prepare for these things and you are likely to survive them.

Survivalist Boards is recommended for these discussions. I've been on it for years. Get on over there and ask your questions. There are EMTs, fireman, policemen, doctors, crypto investors, ....and even a few guys that know all about nukes.

Yes, unfortunately reality is much different than the prepper/survivalist ultimate dream come true. ;)

Outside of a Nuclear/B/C War, Super Volcanos and Comet Strikes pretty much anything else is for the most part survivable.

E.L.E. is a real thing.
