Manix 2 52100 question

#1

Post by ThorstToast »

Hello all,

I hope this is the correct place for posting this. I have recently bought a used Manix 2 52100 and I am super happy with it.

Today I found a small grind mark right next to the jimpings which for me sounds like it is a factory second blade. The seller told be it was not sold to him like that.

What confuses me at the moment is, that the grind mark is underneath the DLC coating. That would mean it was marked before final QC.

Now my questions: Did anyone saw that before? Is it probably a factory second or just some manufacturing defect which was not recognized? I cannot find anything issues on the blade or knife itself.

Thanks in advance for your help. I will try to upload some pictures.

Best regards,
Thorsten

Dear ThorstToast:

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

I have never seen a blade marked as a second before it was DLC coated. That's very strange.

Stay safe,

I wonder if someone touched it up with a cold bluing pen or something like that to blend the notch.

That was my first thought. I've definitely seen that, before.

Generally the seconds mark is farther away from the jimping, but anything is possible.

My guess is that it is a second, but who knows.

All of the DLC factory seconds I have were marked after the DLC coating was applied, like Mike said. I’d agree with Gtscotty and Giygas, it does look touched up.

Rest assured, if it is a factory second it will work fine and any flaws are purely cosmetic. I really can’t tell why many of my factory seconds are factory seconds.

Here’s how my PM 2’s are marked:

I’ve also never seen a factory second marked before it is DLC coated.

It looks like there is marring on the high points of the jimping as well. That may or may not be a clue from an impact on that part of the knife. Although, I would also expect the DLC to wear off if that was a chip or blemish from an impact.

It looks different from the seconds I have seen. Maybe, maybe not.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.
Thanks Mike! Happy to be here.

Really love the Manix 2 - the 52100 steel is super sharp :) I guess I will handle it definitely like it’s a unique piece :winking-tongue

Thank you very much for your feedbacks.

Greetings,
Thorsten
