Waterproof knives

How come other companies don’t make knives to use in water? Spyderco seems to be the only one, or are there others?

Benchmade has made a few. I had an n680 Griptilian that was marketed as waterproof.

Ontario just came out with a Magnacut dive knife.

AG Russell makes this abomination that I really want for some reason:

I didn’t know Benchmade made something. How come more big name brands don’t have offerings? Just not popular?

Wow, that's cool! Marlin spike and serrated tip are things you don't see every day.

Edit: Ouch, that price....

Willing to bet most don't use H1/H2, or L200N. One or two may use Ti or something else that is very stainless.

I remember back in the late ‘90s, Boker came out with a liner lock knife that was touted as rust proof. IIRC, the blade steel was X15 T.N. Also, Benchmade came out with a serrated sheepsfoot fixed blade knife, IIRC, in that same steel. This was sometime in the very early 2000s. These predated Spyderco’s Salt series. When Spyderco began making Salts, they chose H1 over X15 T.N.

Don't really need it depending on the steel used.

I know Randalls stainless knives are almost impossible to rust.

Also other steels like N690 and N680 are VERY stainless too. They are pretty much the go to steels for dive knives and have been for awhile over in Europe.

N680 is very, very corrosion resistant. I have a Lone Wolf (Benchmade bought them out) in N680 and I've been in the ocean all day and the knife was submerged in salt water. The only time it came out was to cut some bait or cut something else. Never a spot of rust.

Quiet carry makes great waterproof knives.

This my QC Waypoint in the Ardeche river. Not something I would normally do with a knife, but hey, these waterproof claims need to be tested 😉🫣

Don’t know why this water proof idea is cool to me. Fun to go swimming in the lake with a knife in my pocket 🏖️ 🔪

Benchmade's leaked 2024 catalog actually has a "water" section with a few new releases, all in Magnacut:

I can't believe it, BM releasing some interesting knives :rofl

I've owned a few in the past but they haven't put out much that caught my eye since the 2000's. The crooked river looked nice but I already had enough folders in that category to want to spend $200+ on a thumbstud folder.

I'll watch for these magnacut models to hit retailers.

I think the term would be extremely saltwater resistant because 100% water proof probably doesn't exist.

My earliest are Boker H&K with X15TN steel, Benchmade Triage with N680 steel and Magnum Titan Submariner ALL titanium fixed blade dive knife (one piece titanium with no screws).

I also have knives with H-1, LC200N, MagnaCut and Vanax SuperClean steels.

For folders you have to contend with the weakest links which usually is not the blade steel.

My Quiet Carry Drift folder has addressed all components:

  • Blade Steel: Vanax SuperClean
  • Body Type: 6AL 4V Titanium
  • Hardware: 6AL 4V Titanium (T8)
  • Pivot: 6AL 4V & SST
  • Clip: Tip-up marine SST
  • Lock bar insert: LC200N/Z-FiNit
  • Detent: Ceramic
  • Washers: Phosphor bronze
