Bang-for-buck >3" Spydies on the used market?

#1

Post by Bolster »

In the "carrying today" thread I made a comment on a forumite's Spy27 Manix that it must be one of the best bang-for-buck particle knives on the used market, occasionally seen on eBay in the low $100 range. And then I got to thinking, there may be even better bang-for-buck Spydercos on the used market.

I know smaller sized knives sell for less, but I consider decent blade size, PM steel, and a monster lock to be part of the "bang" in the bang-for-buck calculation, which is why I nominated the SPY-Mx.

What would you nominate?

Not counting all the recent discounted Spydies …..

I would still say the Endura is right up there for buck bang. Still find some ZDPs out there - $100 or less -and that’s a good deal!

But I do agree on the SPY Manix - great steel and great deal!

Endura or Delica in an ultra high carbide steel. There's been some great k390 and 20cv deals lately.

The Tenacious in S35VN is a great deal even at MAP pricing, and is an absolute steal if you can find it deeply discounted on the used market. Excellent ergos, a sturdy liner lock, with one of the most balanced stainless particle metallurgy knife steels outside of Magnacut. Decent platform for customization, too, as there are a lot of third-party aftermarket parts available for the model.

Everything zulu said about the Tenacious S35VN goes for the Resilience S35VN, too. I got mine well under the already low MAP. Very inexpensive for what it is.

as much as i love the manix, i would have a hard time not recommending the 20cv delica wharnie from knifejoy at $75 over a $100+ used manix lw right now.

Resilience for $60 is tough to beat if I can't nominate Cara Caras.

Shout out to ebaying Pacific Salt 1's for $40-80.

Agreed. I don’t think I have seen a brand new Spyderco knife with 20cv steel that cheap in years.
Just one more knife...

A pm2 fully serrated s30v factory second sold last night for $78 on eBay. I thought that was an excellent price.

It doesn't come with a particle metallurgy steel as standard & recent price hikes have probably taken it out of the running as an entry-level Spyderco, but I still think the bog-standard Delica 4 offers decent relative value for the price in the ~3" space, especially now that the retail cost of non-Spyderco Chinese-made folders in steels like 154CM, AUS-10, & 14C28N have continued to go up. I think VG10 has become kind of underrated in recent years—it is still a perfectly serviceable user steel that has a decent balance of characteristics for a folding knife steel, and I actually prefer it over BD1N or 154CM. And for me, at least, the Delica's ergonomics are among the best in the size range for the type of cutting I do.
