Is 15V the Chuck Norris of tool steels?

#1

Post by JoviAl »

I noticed yesterday while cleaning yet more corrosion off of my T15 mule that my 15V Shaman never seems to rust. Corrosion appears to just look at it, consider its life choices up until that point and then keep on walking with its eyes on the ground. I like to imagine this is due to the scary bear incorporated into the BBB logo (which as we all know is Chuck Norris’s spirit animal), but in seriousness can anyone shed any light on why this might be?

*I treat my knives all with equal care and preventative maintenance, but
apart from Magnacut, S110V, LC200, Vanax and H1 they all get occasional corrosion on them after a day’s work outdoors in the tropics. The tool steels especially are a labour of love to keep corrosion free apart from 15V.

15v doesn't dull, it waits

15v can cut 100 yards of rope in 20 yards

15v sharpens it's self

😂 and here I was trying to be serious for once! Now I’ve gone down the Chuck Norris meme rabbit hole whilst sat in A&E with broken ribs. I’m laughing then yelping in pain and getting some pretty weird looks.

I've been quite surprised at how well my 15V is doing with corrosion resistance. Holds an edge very well also. I still think K390 does very well, but 15V has really impressed me. And the sharpening experience with 15V is on another level! Overall I'm a big fan of 15V, but I still recommend Spyderco K390 without reservation for folks that didn't get in on 15V but want a high hardness and wear resistance tool steel.

My K390 users all have a bit of patina. Still working on my 15V PM2, I'm quite honestly shocked that it doesn't show anything to speak of yet.
Because desolate places allow us to breathe. And most people don't even know they're out of breath.

I have an S90V PM2 that's pretty **** impressive. Very happy with that steel. Don't own any 15V's yet, but I plan on making it favorite knife of the week soon 😂😂😂

Thanks man - you too. It really does take the shine off of laughing, breathing deeply, lying down, sitting up, hugging your children… 🤷🏼‍♂️ such is life.

Same - my K390 has a lovely patina, but the 15V looks practically new. They’re both good stuff in their own ways 👍🏻

I think we're on the same page. K390 was my favorite, but now I'm carrying 15V more often. I can't say for sure which is the better performing knife steel. I'm curious how 15V performs with serrations.

My 15V Manix has a slight patina, but I’ve seen no rust whatsoever. Whereas I’ve had to clean rust off my K390 a few times. That’s no big deal, it’s a tool steel and a little extra maintenance goes with the territory. But it makes me appreciate 15V all the more.

I’m still testing 15V alongside K390, Hap40/Rex45, and RexT15.

I’ve been pretty impressed with this grade of steel in general, for my uses.

Hopefully, we continue to see more of all of these kind of steels in the respective places Spyderco has been producing knives with them.

15V specifically has seen the most use from me, and it definitely corrodes less than K390.
rex121 is the king of steel, but nature’s teeth have been cutting for hundreds of millions of years and counting

The question you have to ask is, Chuck Norris the 15V of humans? 🤔

You can actually sharpen 15V on his stubble.

15v never cuts anything. The material surrenders once they see it is 15V and the atoms jump out of the way.

😂

Well that explains its superb edge retention!
