Sold Out Dates for Mules?

#1

Post by Bolster »

Did anyone keep a record of "sold out by" dates for Mules? I'm curious which mule releases sold fastest and slowest.

EDIT: Great responses received, assimilated below. Goal is to keep the Blue Mule List updated under the stickied "Past Mule Teams" thread. But for now (August 2023), here's what we've got:

[Edit: To keep just one "blue list," it's now kept only on the Past Mule Teams thread, on page 5. You'll know it when you see it, it's blue! Or go here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=89168&p=1739413#p1739413]

I think 15V sold out quickly too.

OTOH, I think A11 and PD#1 were record holders for slow sell-out, after which the mule team was put on hiatus.

But what others were fast/slow sellers?

Z Max and Z Wear sold out within a few hours
SPY27 and S45VN within a day IIRC
SRS13/SUS405 sold out the next day

Earlier ones you would have to ask the old crew.

I know
Steel: CPM 20CV
Steel: Micro-Melt A11 (PMA11)
Steel: Micro-Melt PD#1
We’re all around for many months and CPM 20CV sold out just before the Mule went into a hiatus

The SPY-27 is the only one that sold out in under a week, I can tell you that much.
Not quite. Sorry to disagree, but the early Mules (probably the first 10) sold out quickly. Most within 15 minutes to an hour. It was only later that they started to slow down.

It may have been a completely one-off random scenario, but I went into the SFO in 11/2020 and picked up a PD#1 Mule which was released 10/2017. Just had asked if they had any in stock and they went back to look and came back with it. Not sure if they just randomly found one or if they still had some in stock. I was just getting back into mules at that time, and had not "lurked" on this forum in a few years, so I was unaware of its original release date.

Side note: That was an awesome trip to the SFO. I was in CO for a trip and knew I was driving by Golden so I could stop in, so took some knives to get sharpened. I didn't realize at the time that the lady helping me was Gail. She showed me around, sharpened the knives I brought, and also gave me a gift, which was a kind surprise. Again, I had not been on the forum for a few years and was just getting back into buying knives.

Been back to SFO two times since then. One time was just good timing and was the day of the release of the Subway Bowie, so got that right after opening. The other time was just the usual good time. But both times since, no random mules in stock, and hadn't seen Gail to thank her.

So...I'm going to try to add sell-out times to the "blue list" I keep (halfway down the page at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=89168&start=60 in blue), but will post in this thread first, to see if we can jog a few more memories and get our notes in order before I go revise the blue list.

Only five categories being used: sell out in minutes, hours, days, weeks, or months.

Please post up if you can help, or if you have more accurate info!

EDIT: Thanks for the input! Adding as it comes in. Thanks!!!!

MT33 - Steel: CPM REX 76 | Released Sep 2022 | Quantity: Approximately 1000| $75
Sold out in just over 2 days.

MT35 - Steel: CPM MagnaCut | Released: December 2021 | Quantity: Approximately 2000 | $75
Sold out in hours. The only reason it didn't sell out in minutes was due to the website crashing. It was available until early/mid-afternoon IIRC.

MT39 - Steel: CPM 15V | Released: May 2023 | Quantity: Approx. 1300 | $75
Sold out in hours. It went OOS 2.5hrs after release.

Those are the ones I am able to help with. Hope its useful.

Haha, I suppose it is! I will try to find some others when time allows. It's a cool thing to track with different variables at play in quantities, hype, price, economic factors, etc.

Thank you for putting the list together.

Alright, had some time to do some digging on the forum, and this is what I have found so far for the first 10. This should give a decent accurate idea. I will continue to dig through others this weekend hopefully.

MT01 - Steel: 52100 | Released: January 2008 | Quantity: Approximately 600 | $79.95
Released 1/10/2008 - Sold out a few hours later according to forum posts.

MT02 - Steel: CPM M4 | Released: October 2008 | Quantity: Approximately 600 | $69.95
Released 10/22/2008 - Reportedly sold out on 11/11/2008. On 12/19/2008 Kristi posted that a few more were going to be posted on the website as well as some 2nds. I cannot find a post on when those additional ones sold out.

MT03 - Steel: CPM S90V | Released: February 2009 | Quantity: Approximately 700 | $69.95
Sold out within a few hours of release.

MT04 - Steel: ZDP-189 | Released: July 2009 | Quantity: Approximately 500 | $79.95
The possibly sold out same day. But this was the weird one with the heat treat issues. Kristi posted on 11/30/2009 that they knew of the heat treatment issues and a good batch (not seconds) was to be posted on the website in a window between 11/30/2009 - 12/14/2009 unless sold out before 12/14. She then went on to say a 2nd batch of HT would be performed and those would be released 4-8 weeks later, but cannot find posts on that later occurring.

MT05 - Steel: 9Cr18Mo | Released: October 2009 | Quantity: Approximately 1,000 | $19.95
Released 10/14/2009 and users posted out of stock on 11/25/2009.

MT06 - Steel: CPM S35VN | Released: January 2010 | Quantity: Approximately 500 | $64.95
Released on 1/12/2010 and users posted out of stock on 1/15/2010.

MT07 - Steel: Damascus/VG-10 | Released: October 2010 | Quantity: Approximately 600 | $84.95
Released on 10/1/2010 and users posted out of stock on 10/14/2010.

MT08 - Steel: Aogami Super Blue | Released: December 2010 | Quantity: Approximately 600 | $79.95
Released 12/10/2010 and users were posting that it was still in stock on 4/30/2011. I could not find a post about when it went out of stock.

MT09 - Steel: Cobalt Special | Released: February 2011 | Quantity: Approximately 600 | $84.95
Released 3/1/2011 and was posted it was still available on 6/21/2011. I could not find a post about when it went out of stock.

MT10 - Steel: CTS BD1 | Released: June 2010 | Quantity: Approximately 500 | $69.95
On 7/15/2010 Kristi posted that the restriction was lifted. On 11/20/2010 a user posted that it still was in stock. I could not find a post about when it went out of stock.

Here are the next two:

MT11 - Steel: M390 | Released: June 2011 | Quantity: Approximately 600 | $74.95
Released 6/13/2011. The restriction was lifted 7/7/2011. I could not find a post about when it went out of stock.

MT12 - Steel: Cru-Wear, re-heat treated | Released: September 2011 | Quantity: Approximately 800 | $59.95
Originally released on 9/12/2011. Restriction was lifted on 9/19/2011. The recall due to heat treatment was announced on 9/26/2011 and they suspended sales.
They were re-released on 1/20/2012 and users were still ordering them on 2/2/2012. I could not find a post about when it went out of stock.

MT13 - Steel: Elmax | Released: February 2012 | Quantity: Approximately 500 | $64.95
I have not had luck finding this one so far.

MT15 - Steel: CTS B75P | Released: September 2012 | Quantity: Approximately 400 | $74.95
Released 9/14/2012. Last posted sale was 9/23/2012. Can’t find a solid out of stock date.

MT16 - Steel: CTS XHP | Released: December 2012 | Quantity: Approximately 700 | $59.95
Released 12/19/2012. Offered both normal and “blemished” models that were not considered seconds. They were still available on 1/10/2013. I could not find a solid out of stock date.

MT17 - Steel: K390 | Released: July 2013 | Quantity: Approximately 700 | $69.95
Released 7/18/2013. Sold out on 7/22/2013.

MT18 - Steel: CPM S110V | Released: February 2014 | Quantity: Approximately 800 | $89.95
Released on 2/5/2014. They sold out by that night. Spyderco then released another batch on 2/17 which looks like went back out of stock on 2/20.

MT19 - Steel: PSF27 | Released: August 2014 | Quantity: Approximately 800 | $79.95
Released 8/6/2014. There was still quite a bit of stock available on 8/11/2014. Members said it sold slow, leads me to believe it was available for 1+ month.

MT20 - Steel: CTS B70P | Released: February 2015 | Quantity: Approximately 800 | $79.95
Released 3/27/2015. Was still available on 2/11/2016. I could not find a solid out of stock date.

MT21 - Steel: CPM 4V | Released: October 2015 | Quantity: Approximately 700 | $69.95
Release 10/8/2015. Was still available mid 04/2016. I could not find a solid out of stock date.

No problem! It’s fun looking back into old threads on the forums and seeing what people were saying. It was interesting to see that there were seconds of M4, how they handled the heat treat issues of ZDP-189, the recall on Cru-wear, and offering the blemished XHP at the normal time of sale as an option for discounted price. It was also entertaining to see when the website starting having crashing issues to demand on some of the releases. With that said, makes me appreciate the program and for how Spyderco handles it all and always tries to make it right or do the right thing.

There’s a lot of other info in threads I’m coming across which could be useful for other topics as well.

I will keep looking up the others!

You're unearthing very interesting (and to me unknown) facts about the mule program. I've consolidated the list to the first post in this thread, to make it easier for others to find the good stuff. Thanks again!!

MT22 - Steel: RWL 34 | Released: April 2016 | Quantity: Approximately 800 | $69.95
Released 4/8/2016. Was still in stock 7/18/2016. I could not find a solid out of stock date.

MT23 - Steel: CPM 20CV | Released: Dec 2016 | Quantity: Approximately 700
Released 12/15/2016. Looks like users still ordered some on 4/27/17. I could not find an out of stock date.

MT24 - Steel: Maxamet | Released: Aug 2016 | Quantity: Approximately 700
Released 8/4/2016. Users were still ordering them on 8/13/2016 but cannot find an out of stock date. I would say this was the first “pre release hype” mule as it had a lot of back and forth discussions before its release day. Sal also said they were heat treated to 67-68.

MT25 - Steel: LC200N | Released: Apr 2017 | Quantity: Approximately 800
Released 4/12/2017. Was still available 8/8/2017. Could not find a solid out of stock date.

MT26 - Steel: Micro-Melt A11 (PMA11) | Released: Aug 2017 | Quantity: Approximately 700
Released 8/7/17. Very little conversions about it. Spyderco put more on the website around 3/9/2019. Then a user was able to pick one up at SFO on 9/3/2021. This is probably the slowest seller and longest gap of sales if you don’t include the ZDP-189 seconds sold late 2022.

MT27 - Steel: Micro-Melt PD#1 | Released: Oct 2017 | Quantity: Approximately 800
Released 10/19/2017. More conversation than MT26 but still was slow. Spyderco put them on their website over a 2 year span randomly. Seems I am the last known purchaser at this time as I purchased one at SFO on 11/16/2020.

I am going to take a little break now but that gets us to the point before the hiatus of the mule program!
